Thanks, and there seems to be a sense of wanting to believe that the guy knocking on doors is completely innocent and the OP is a complete "bleep".

But I think it's the other way around.

If, as you claim, you are completely honest about collecting cans for Kids for Cancer, then do the charity a faavour, do it properly.

1. Wear ID for the charity.
2. Dress appropiately.

If you are down on your luck and need gas money for your late model rust coloured van, say,

1.. "could you help me out, I need a few bucks for gas money, got any pop cans I can use."

But do not misrepresent your intentions.

And, if you are scouting for houses to break into, pray to God that you are lucky enough, consistently enough, that there are completely naive people out there, who would give you another moments thought.
