Cardiac Specialist for Dogs in the OK

Post by Sides »

I have a puppy who is 3 and a half months of age, and have been told that he has a grade 1 heart murmur. I was first told that it sounded significant, so went for a second opinion and was told not to worry about it. Now though, the second vet is recommending testing to see what is causing it. I've been told by others and have found online that it could still go away within a few months, and it is very early to be testing. My vet also wants to put him under for the ultrasound because they don't think he'll stay still for the procedure, but I don't think it's a good idea to put him under any kind of sedation or anesthetic when he has a heart condition of any kind. The vet also would be doing a video consultation for the results because they don't have anyone to come in for the ultrasound. I'm wondering if there are any cardiac specialists for dogs in the Okanagan, specifically in Kelowna, where I can get proper testing by someone who would really know what they were looking at or if anyone has any advice or experience with these matters. Thanks!

sorry to hear pup has a problem. With Zoe they had to send her for an ultrasound at the Vet's in Glenmore . I don't think they sedated her. Dr Kai ( my Vet) spent a lot of time discussing the case with a female Vet who specializes in heart conditions. If you are going to have the Pup spayed or neutered could they not do the ultrasound at the same time?

This is a good source for vet info.
In particular read the last paragraph
"innocent murmurs".

I would question why they need to sedate since sedation is going to alter the heart rhythm. I believe ultrasounds for cardiac reasons are generally done without sedation for that reason. There are many clinics that have ultrasounds now so I would get a 2nd/3rd opinion if necessary.
