Looking for suggestions regarding where to find pet medical insurance . Wether it be from a company or a specific Vet , seems like we're gonna need some sort of coverage for our new little beagle..

She picked up a peice of speer grass in her eye while roaming the yard last night and had to get it removed at a vet today ...

Now I'm not complaining about the cost ( $115.00) but one day we might not have it "on hand" and having the insurance , if possible , makes good sense to us.

Any one know ??

There are several different options available- just look up Canadian pet insurance companies. As someone who has had many covered pets, I have used my pet insurance on many occasions. I would suggest getting the best policy you can afford, and that you read the fine print very carefully. You are required to pay for services up front, and are reimbursed afterward, once a claim form has been submitted. If you don't have money on hand, insurance won't help you. There are other options, such as "vet cards" which you apply for, and work like a loan- you request an amount based on a quote from a vet clinic. These only work if your vet clinic is registered with the company. A low interest credit card is also an option, but insurance is always nice when a really large vet bill comes up! If only you weren't required to pay up front........that would be fantastic!!

Yeah , I found this out when I called the Vet that treated our mutt and asked some questions...

I think our best route is to pay up front via an " account credit ". I'm going to fork over $ 500.00 to them first , then shop for insurance for our doggy....

At the very least , we'll have that cash WAY up front and hopefully that will be enough to sway any heartfelt animal lover such as a Vet to understand our ability AND intention to pay in the event of an accident and not send us and the mutt packing like an non insured US citizen...

This money first and "submit a claim form for reimbursment " just stinks of " claim denied due to <insert reason here>"..

I haven't had any real issues with my insurance company paying out- but they do get you on pre-existing conditions(you have to sign up for insurance as soon as you get the animal) and place limits on coverage once claims have been made. They have had to fork over thousands of dollars though- has been a real lifesaver! Next time I will insure differently, so that I have better coverage .Pre-paying at a clinic is a good idea, have done that before. At least you're covered for smaller emergencies. Once you sign up for insurance, there is usually a waiting period of 30 days before the full coverage of your policy takes effect, and they will review all of your dog's previous medical history, so that hey can make exclusions to your coverage. I hope she stays healthy and happy too...

She's only one year old and has a clean bill of health so we'll give a policy a try AFTER we pre pay the clinic. Hopefully , we can find a policy that will work.
