An 8 year old Beagle mix has been shot around 7:00 pm Sunday Aug/30/2015 in the Ellison area of Kelowna. Dr. Eliot Kaplan of TriLake Animal Hospital has removed pellets from Ozzie's spleen and kidney in his usual highly skilled manner, and the pup is now on the way to recovery. These injuries would have been fatal.

Obviously, this is highly disturbing - someone using a small animal for target practice. Rapidly repeated shots to the flank/abdomen of a fast moving Beagle are not accidental. The connection between harming animals and moving on to killing humans is well known, so incidents of this nature must always be taken very seriously. The shooter may be someone with very poor judgement combined with very low values and perhaps low intelligence, or could be a dangerous psychopath, or some of each.

The pellets are the sort that makes Dr. Kaplan think of a .22 air rifle, the sort of ammunition that seriously harms humans as well. We are not talking BB shot here.

Maybe this person doesn't care for Beagles or it was droppin deuces where it shouldn't be to the point of one saying....beat it mutt! I dunno I love dogs personally, but maybe this is just practice until the courage is gained to advance to humans.

This is horrible. No one should hurt an animal like that, but before I would label this person a psychopath I'd like to know more about the circumstances. Specifically, was this pup at large when it was shot? It doesn't excuse shooting it, but it's a different situation than some nutter coming into someone else's property and harming their pet.

Doesn't matter the circumstances, period. Anyone that would do this should be lined up against a fence and given the same treatment. And I would gladly be the first one to repay the gesture.

This is totally shameful act, the person who did this should be answering for his or her actions.

I get the point you're trying to make. Shooting a harmless dog is an extreme and inhumane thing to do. Ultimately though, responsibility lies with the owner - why did they allow their dog to wander off their property going who knows where? Keep your dog on your property and under your control and that will go a long ways to keeping your dog safe.

This was my dog. First thank you for those of you who had such kind words to say. Ozzie is recovering well, but still in a very fragile state where he needs to be monitored 24/7.

To those others who for reasons beyond me have deiced that my personal tragedy is something to make light of. First we were still on our property, second Ozzie is an extremely friendly dog and who ever did this would have had to have been very close to do the damage they did. Since it was an Air Rifle is made no sound so I never saw who Shot Ozzie, but who ever did did it to Kill my dog. I hope no one will have to suffer this kind of thing again, but the person or persons who did this are very likely to do something like this again and again until they are stopped.

My apologies, I must have misunderstood. I thought the original story said that your dog had wandered off for 10 - 15 minutes and you didn't know where he was. You mean someone came onto your property and shot him intentionally? That's even more frightening and concerning. I hope your dog recovers fully.
