Looking for a second opinion - Vet suggestions

Post by fraserkr »

Hey there - We are new to Kelowna and our poor little fur baby is having heart problems. She is turning 12 right away and seems so healthy that all of this has really taken us by surprised and devastated us. We've had a terrible week where my wife an I are "pre-grieving" - we can't keep it together. She is just a huge part of our lives and just the thought of not having her is overwhelming. I look at her and she is happy and playful as ever, so it's really tearing me up.

We had an ECG and xrays done. I figure that if it was me who was sick, I would see 2 doctors at least, so I want to do the same for my pup. I don't want someone to tell me everything is going to be OK - I know it isn't. She is dying, I get that. I more want a second opinion at treatment and care.

Please let me know if you have had great experiences somewhere.

Thanks in advance.

A general idea of area you live in would help narrow down choices.
Lake Country - Tri Lake Animal Hospital
Rose Valley (West Kelowna) - Rose Valley Veterinary Hospital
Westbank (West Kelowna) - Westbank Animal Care Hospital
Kelowna - Fairfield Animal Hospital
Those are some that come to mind.
So many of us here know how you feel - enjoy every moment and take lots of photos.
Truths can be backed up by facts - do you have any?
Fancy this, Fancy that and by the way, T*t for Tat

Thanks for the response. We live just over the bridge in West K. but are willing to go anywhere there is a vet with lots of cardiac experience. The diagnosis/treatment/activity plan that the first vet gave us doesn't seem to line up with the report we got back from the specialist that read the ECG. I just want to make sure I don't waste her last bit of time keeping her from living her life to the fullest.

Thank you so much for your help.

Never give up hope and keep on giving to your dog as much as you can - you'll never regret not sleeping just to watch them sleep.

Personally I'll suggest Westbank Animal Care (small animal experience that was suggested years ago) but I've heard of those at Carrington that are excellent so another choice. Don't think you'll go wrong whatever you do. People invest themselves into the animal community almost to a fault so I'm sure you'll be in good hands no matter where you go. Personal preference. Listen to the vet, learn what is best for you and your family member and do what they suggest. It could be days, months, years but make the most of those times together. In our case - too short (why I suggest taking lots of photos and videos). Time does run out so you don't want to have any regrets. Plan for the end too - there are choices so you don't want to be surprised.

I would also suggest Westbank Animal Care, they were great with my dogs and cats! When I was pricing out neutering for my cat, I skipped Carrington when they gave me the choice of pain medication for my male cat getting neutered. But this was a few years ago so who knows what has changed in that time. I just found that a bit odd that there was a choice for pain medication.

There is a mobile vet in Kelowna, highly recommend her if anyone ever needs to get their fur baby put to sleep. So much nicer for the pet and the family if they can stay in the comfort of their own home.
