Does anyone know what that 2- story building behind and to the right of the church was? It looks like an apartment building but I don't remember it. I do recall OK Builders occupying the building next to the church on 43rd Avenue where the Dollar Tree is now. Thanks for posting these neat old shots.

The two-story stucco wing is attached to the church. That part of the church looks detached but it's not. The open underside allowed cars to drive from 27th St. to the church's rear parking lot, which was also adjoined to a larger parking lot between the church and OK Builders, accessed from 43rd. I attended Sunday school in the church basement. I lived a block away on 29th St. -- OK Builders and the church were on my bicycle route. It sure was a beautiful church. I too miss the sunday bells.

The right-hand corner from 27th onto 43rd changed angle configurations a few times during the 1970s to accommodate increasing truck traffic. A big rig turning right knocked a telephone pole onto a student waiting to use the crosswalk. 43rd Ave sure had heavy traffic prior to the overpass being built in 1985.

Red Rooster convenience store was on 27th across the street from the church. I thought it was a pretty cool spot for convenience store at the time.

Vernon Toyota was to the right of the church.

Hello,

My daughter is doing a report of the history of Polson Park and the working Flower Clock,

I was hoping if anyone had any information or photo's about these two things if they'd be willing to share them with my daughter for her project!

Can anyone remember the Coldstream Hotel, otherwise known as Chilly Creek (i.e. cold-stream) ? We had so much fun there in the late 60's...closing the bar down regularly. Service was shut off at 12.30 a.m. But warning came at midnight and we'd order 16 beers for the four of us...those small draughts. Up until 12.30 a.m. you could buy a box of 24 beers to take home. Many a morning I'd wake with no recollection of driving home ! Not great...but that was then and we were young and foolish.

Back of Coldstream you could drive out above the north-east end of Kal Lake, around the side of the hill...park (you had to), and then walk in to this tiny lake just loaded with trout, throw up a tent and get up at dawn and catch a string of fish. We would grab a long bough and stick it in the water by the shore and , by twisting it several times, be able to pull out some weeds just a'crawlin' with helgromites (dragonfly larvae). Best bait ever and guaranteeing fish which loved these wiry bugs.
I even once caught a big trout and hauled it in backwards ( it must've wacked at the hook with it's tail). I'll always remember the confused look on it's face).

Eventually word got out and some lazy fool pulled in an aluminum boat with an ATV and soon there were tin cans and beer bottles and other garbage floating about and it was fished out and totally ruined. Humans can be so destructive.

Until that sad day,we'd go out after closing down the Chilly Creek, laughing all the way, dragging a Coleman tent stuffed with sleeping gear, food and a skillet. One time, sleeping off a bellyful of beer, I awoke feeling wet. One of the guys had carefully slid me, feet first, out of the tent into the pouring rain. Why! You may ask ?

It's a bit of a tale but worth telling.

Picture this; John and I , sitting at a table at Chilly Creek at closing time. I ask him " What time is it ?". He looks at his watch and says " 6 o'clock !". I replied that that couldn't be right at which a mischievous smile came over his face and he says " Let's go wake Donny ( it was Saturday night and we'd arranged to go fishing with him, early the following morning).

We quickly drove out down 32nd Ave to the house where Don rented a basement apartment and quietly walked in, trying like hell not to burst out laughing as John had explained his fiendish plot to me as we pulled into his driveway.

Feeling our way through the dark apartment we called out "Hey Donny, what's up man ?", eventually getting some grunts followed by " Jeezuss, what's happening?". I said "You've slept in...remember we're going out to the pond to do some fishing !" He switched on the light and blinking, stared at us ( he was as blind as a bat without his glasses) and started cussing and laughing and apologizing all at once as he staggered out of bed, complaining at his alarm clock which he thought had neglected to wake him.

"Donny, look at the time..", John said, holding out his arm and offering the face of his wristwatch at our blinking buddy..."..it's already 6 o'clock, come on or we'll miss the fishing !"

Now, if you will recall, the hands of the watch at 6 are in exactly the same position as at 12.30 and Donny, without his specs, was none the wiser so he struggled to his feet (probably after only an hour or two of sleep) and said " I've gotta grab a quick shower and I'll be there, ok " and he rushed to the bathroom as we collapsed, *bleep* ourselves with laughter, in front of a late night movie on his black and white TV !! Pretty soon singing comes from the shower.

About 10 minutes later We hear Donny jump out of the shower, hurriedly dry himself off and throw on his clothes. A few minutes later, there he is standing in the living room doorway, all *bleep* and briney, fishing pole in hand and his mouth drops open as his befuddled mind gradually dawns on the fact that something's not right as he views John and I stretched out, dozing in front of the telly.

"Wwwwwww..wait a sec," he stutters as his head swivels back and forth from us to the telly to, finally, his own watch ... ( the proverbial penny is so close to dropping now), "You freaking bxxxxxxs " he spits out as he realizes he's been had and while he stands there spluttering off invectives, we are rolling on the rug in paroxisms of laughter.

"If you guys think you're going home to sleep, you're out of luck 'cos WE ARE GOING FISHING guys, and RIGHT NOW !!"

What could we do ? We were all great friends and we'd had a laugh at his expense so, grabbing his sleeping bag, we helped him throw in some blankets, a pillow, a loaf of bread and other necessities and, between the three of us we hauled it up the stairs ( landlady was half deaf) and tossed it in the back of my V8 Malibu 2Dr coupe. We all piled in and, stopping momentarily at my apartment for the tent, more sleeping bags, skillet and rods, we headed off down the Kal road until we reached the closed gate.

Two drunks and a spluttering Donny must have been quite a sight, under the stars, as we dragged the bulging sleeping bag, full of camping supplies, through the undergrowth and trees to the campsite (OUR campsite) and, still laughing with a few complaints beginning to creep in, we set up the tent as it began to cloud up and the moon gradually started to disappear.

Worn out from a bellyful of beer, much hilarity and a hike we were soon 'out cold'.

Famous last words ? That's how I ended up, sopping wet, lying out in the pouring rain ! And that's how, about 15 minutes later, in the miserable grey dawn, I was to be found in my underwear, up to my knees in the pond, blinking through my wet glasses at the a half eaten marmalade sandwich in my left hand and gripping my casting rod in my right, waiting for my first bite !

Driving up to Silver Star after a good snowfall in the late 1960's. The only way to do it was to keep your foot on the gas on the steeper bits. Trouble came when a nervous out-of-towner slowed and then stopped half way up and no one could get going again.

Canadian skier, Nancy Greene, paraded down the main drag to hordes of admiring fans. c 1968

Nicknamed "Tiger" because of her 'go for it' attitude and her aggressive style of skiing, she won the Canadian ski championship nine times and the United States championship three times. In 1967, Nancy Greene broke the European domination of the sport, winning the inaugural World Cup. That year she won seven of 16 events, taking the over-all title with four giant slalom victories plus two in slalom and one in downhill. Her accomplishment earned her Canadian "Athlete of the Year" honours.

In 1968 she won the World Cup title again plus, at the Winter Olympic Games in Grenoble, France, she captured a gold medal in the giant slalom, by one of the largest margins in Olympic history, and a silver medal in the slalom. For the second time, she was named Canada's "Athlete of the Year."

I'd love to post a photo but cannot for the life of me figure out how (img ?) But then what?

'Img' is simply a prefix for an image file, 'jpg' is another example. If you're using a pc, click the 'upload attachment' tab below the comment window, then 'choose file'. Navigate to the photo, double-click it and you should see it's filename in the 'filename' window. Then click 'add the file' and 'submit' and you're done. The procedure may be somewhat different for android and apple devices but I haven't tried uploading from one of those.

I'm completely in favor of the separation of Church and State. My idea is that these two institutions screw us up enough on their own, so both of them together is certain death.

Maximum allowed size is 256 KiB

● Click on Upload Attachment
● Then click on Choose File (this looks on your computer, best to place picture you to post on your desktop)
● If it accepts the photo or attachment then click on add the file
● Then click on Place inline

I usual use centre box along the top, place the link into that so the picture is centred in the post.

Hope this helped
