Many of those old gas station sites had underground tanks that leaked. The soil has a lot of gas still underground and it takes many years for it to leave. Some of the sites have holes drilled into the ground with pipes installed to let the gas vent out. I wouldn't want to build a house or business on one of these sites with that smell coming out of the ground for years.

Kinda figured it was a gas station by pizza hut. That's what my dad was saying they were lots for holding gas. How many years have those lots been their for my dad can't quite remember.
