let's put the reaction dollars (incarceration) into prevention dollars (social services support) and get rid of some of the empty jail houses.

Ummm, the jails are already over capacity. Prevention dollars don't help alleviate the dangerously crowded situation at the moment.

right. prevention is to prevent them from going there in the first place.
Prevention would reduce the numbers.
Proper intervention would reduce the numbers.
Some of these people are in the wrong place.
Rehab programs need to be more effective.
Community courts would help.
And mental illness should be dealt with in a more suitable facility.
Reopen the mental hospitals and see how the jail population is reduced.

While I agree with you that implementing crime prevention methods such as spanking would go a long way towards reducing crime, it doesn't have to cost the tax payers a lot of money. If you think we will ever get rid of the crime or the need for prisons you are seriously delusional.

Not being in favour of a new prison is like saying let's not allow any more gas into the Okanagan because electric cars should replace them. Sorry, but these things take time. You can just bury your head so deep in the sand you can smell China, and pretend we don't have a problem that needs addressing today.

Oh and just in case anyone continues to argue that new jails aren't needed, those two lovebirds who kidnapped a teen in Nova Scotia for sexual abuse, were out on early parole.

Our permissive social experiment isn't working. It's a big failure.

Oh, and read the Internet Black Widow's story, and at age 77, her long criminal history and how permissive we've been. Many people have being victimized by her over and over.

It's time to lock 'em up and throw away keys.

Oliver Mayor Ron Hovanes said they are seeing a positive effect in the community now that the Okanagan Correctional Centre accepting its first inmates.

"We are just seeing the beginning of the economic boost in the entire area," he said

It's funny how they keep telling us prisons are good for the economy. That's crap. Prisons mean we screwed up somewhere along the line, and hard working taxpayers are paying for that mistake.

USA has 25% of the world's prisoners and only 5% of the world's population. Down there, it's called the prison industrial complex and it's a way for some people to get rich.

I wonder if it's the same in Canada?
