Vernon military camp possible transit point for refugees

Post by bob vernon »

With an influx of refugees to Canada in the coming months, the Federal government has been looking for places to temporarily house refugees before they are filtered out to communities around the country. One site mentioned by a Liberal MP is the Vernon Cadet camp which has facilities that are underused at this time of year and could be of use.

What a booster for the Vernon economy! All the federal monies that will help support these thousands of new Canadians! Wonderful!

Be pretty smart idea, a few months in Vernon, these folks will want to relocate to the Prairies, if they had a Camp in Kamloops they'd want to return to Syria.

Siryan's especially being from a hot climate can't handle un-insulated buildings. Heck very few would be able to be comfortable there.
When we used to use the Vernon camp for winter cadet activities there were only a small number of buildings we could use.
No heat

The trouble with having an open mind, of course, is that people will insist on coming along and trying to put things in it.

Vernon's cadet camp is not adequately equipped to house Syrian refugees in the winter, according to a military spokesperson.

Sgt. Todd Shepherd, who runs day-to-day operations at the camp, said most of the buildings are unheated.

“We have only five with furnaces,” Shepherd explained Thursday, when asked about the possibility of refugees landing in Vernon.

“The rest are mothballed in the winter,” he said. “We take the water out of them. All that's left is literally four walls and a roof.”

Shepherd said there has been “nothing, nothing from headquarters” about the camp being used for refugees.

The Liberal government has pledged to bring 25,000 Syrians to Canada by the end of the year.

CTV has reported the Canadian military is prepared to house half of them.

A review has been ordered by the Chief of the Defence Staff, Gen. Jon Vance, looking at military training bases and cadet summer camps.

Shepherd said work currently going on at the camp has been on the books for two years.

“We are retrofitting old buildings because this is to become a tri-service camp,” Shepherd said. “There won't just be army cadets here (in future), but air and sea cadets as well.”

Are you seriously implying that we should house refugees in homes with no heat in winter?

Time to turn it down a level, your on the verge or ridiculousness.
a few are coming, its a done deal, lets get over ourselves do what we can to help them become as Canadian as we can.

I actually was in Cadets in Vernon so I know exactly what they do in the winter,
I will let you in on a secret, they do not spend over night in unheated buildings in the winter at that cadet camp.

According to the news story only 5 building have furnaces, the rest are mothballed for the winter.

But that is still more than what some 200,000 Canadian homeless people have.

There are only 5 buildings with a furnace and temperatures do drop below freezing in the winter. Refugees are entitled to have their basic needs met.
