A great idea. But a terrible idea is to paint a rainbow crosswalk for weak NDPers who will desperately accept votes from all kinds of minorities. Or some kind of green crosswalk for the environmentalists. Another good crosswalk would be good, Conservative blue, with bubbles painted across the street to represent our burgeoning natural gas industry.

The silence is deafening from the people who claimed their only resistance to the rainbow crosswalks was because nobody should have them.....
Or that nobody would be able to figure out its a crosswalk because it's not white. :D

Brace yourself for all the above plus more as once you open the door, there aren't too many they can say no to. Crosswalks are becoming political... wonder why?

But what do you think about the actual topic? The crosswalk in question?

The poppy cross walk is a nice idea. However listening to the counsillor(s) reason for voting against a rainbow cross walk because they felt it to be a diffisive issue, in our community, is rather hypocritically bias. There are after all many people in our community who are opposed to war.

It's been explained and doesn't sound hypocritical at all.

This sidewalk is not to celebrate people because of who they are, but to honour our veterans because of the heroic thing they did. It is to honour their actions, not their identity."

I don't think crosswalks should be anything but the white lines they used to be as it will turn more and more political the more people want to have a crosswalk for Liberals, anti-abortionists, Greenpeace, religions, etc. Hard to say yes to one and no to another.

A plan for a poppy crosswalk in downtown Vernon has been nixed by the head office of the Royal Canadian Legion.

Last month, council voted in favour of the crosswalk as a way of honouring veterans, past and present, for their sacrifices to Canada.

However the Legion has strict rules about how the poppy is treated.

“One of them is the poppy will never be laid on the ground because it cannot be trod upon,” said Vernon Mayor Akbal Mund.
Interesting turn of events.
