Civic Arena to be demolished
Vernon's Civic Arena is to be demolished. A recent engineering study has placed the cost of keeping it useful is $11 to $12 million. Far too much. While it is sad to see the old arena go, it is time.
Do not compare this rink to the old rinks in Penticton and Kelowna. They were built after World War II when better building techniques had been developed. The old Civic was built pre-war and has a host of problems including poorly mixed concrete, decaying plumbing, and wooden roof supports starting to dry rot. Time is up.

Sad to see it go but it is the right move.
W need more ice so hopefully they do something smart with the land like tie an open air ice rink to the tourist centre.
