Vernon has become a disgusting ghetto of homelessness. This summer has really been the tipping point. I doubt it's a coincidence that our mayor allowed camping in parks, and suddenly a massive influx of homeless entered the city. This new project will only be a beacon to bring more of these people into the city.

I have sympathy for those who truly find themselves suddenly without work or shelter. But guess what? Those people actually use the social services available to get back on their feet. The majority of these people do not take this path because it involves them getting clean, growing up, and being responsible.

Someone brought up a great point on Vernon Rant and Rave on FB. Close down the methadone clinic and watch all the druggies leave town.

Build it and they will come. The problem will only get worse as they come in to Vernon from Vancouver and elsewhere. It’s the methadone clinic and city concil that has to bear the blame. Like ants, the more inviting the more you get.
Vernon is already the laughing stock in Calgary and Edmonton. Even in Winnipeg Vernon is the butt of jokes. They call it Vermin, not Vernon!

And to Vernon City Council members and all the bleeding heart do-gooders....How about putting them up in your basement, spare room or even your back yard?
Huh?...Why not?

I hope that you run for council next fall. And unload all that hatred during the all-candidate forums. Just rant away. It might reduce your stress level. C'mon. Why not?

Because_They_Lie wrote:"For whatever reason" - There are varied reasons for homelessness.

Just as there are varied reasons for those who cannot afford the growing rental/mortgage costs.

ALL human beings have a right to safety & protection from the elements, a home.

We begin with housing for the currently homeless, the next step on the agenda should be "affordable housing" for the growing poor and declining middle class.

Both are mandatory.

Providing free housing is far different than providing free drugs - one saves a life - the other destroys a life.

All humans have three basic NEEDS: Food/water, clothing & shelter.

If you love humanity you will have no reason to feel torn on the issue of whether or not any single human being is worthy of shelter.

Iam not torn on anything this whole deal sucks;; these people are in these situations due to themselves;; blame no one else
I can just imagine the condition inside of these units after a year of usage (it wont be pretty) :-X

The unemployed need temporary shelter where they can get help with their job search and resume writing skills. It needs to be a place where they can have access to a computer (to search and apply for jobs), a phone (to receive interview calls), a shower (to look presentable for said interview), money for a haircut (same reason) and a selection of gently used clothing. All designed to get them back into the workforce.

We currently have Government funded agencies who supposedly supply this service. When I was seeking a job, something to do I went. Sadly it was a joke, I never heard a thing from the agency or had and results from their lack of effort. I was even considering work outside of Justice which was my career having numerous skills, carpentry, welding and work ethic.

IF I had no success, trust me these people without education, skill set or work history will have one tough time.

I agree with your post, although it is not that simple.
