Right ..... welcome to an even more of a police state.

I'm guessing you are not at all affected by property taxes because 50 new RCMP members will cost roughy $9 million a year as an increase entirely recovered through property tax assessments. For 2018 the tax jump would be over 8% versus the 3.59% that council will deliberate next week. FYI a 3.59% increase is obscene when one considers the increased cost of living is in the 1.5% order of magnitude.

A police state? Really? Your comment even reflects that you currently consider it a "police state."

North Korea is a Police State. If you feel ANYWHERE in Canada is anything like the conditions in North Korea then wow, what a horrible place we live in. <----sarcasm.

Don't toss around words you clearly don't understand. Canada is in no way a police state.

Want me prove it to you? You're not in jail right now because of your latest comment.

The issue is to what degree of police state is prevalent in Canada at this point of time. Admittedly, Canada is not to the level of the extreme such as North Korea, but is in a degree of police state ...... like it or not.

You do know of course that your participation in this forum along with anything else you do on line is monitored by any number of government agencies including the RCMP. Undoubtedly you have also heard about devices such as "Stingray" that are used by the RCMP to intercept cellular phone conversations. As well you are under constant video surveillance from strategically pointed cameras again operated by one or more sectors of government. A common thread here is that all these surveillance methods and their use is without a warrant.

There is a little document that you might consider reading entitled "Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms" .....after you read that and consider the above examples, come back to me and explain how we are not living in a degree of a police state.

It is up to the Citizens to decide what degree is agreeable ....... not some loose cannon RCMP member of any rank.

First off the "cameras" you refer to are often security cameras placed by private companies to protect their assets.

The Charter protects you against illegal search and seizure primarily but how do you have any expectation of privacy walking down a street? Everyone can see you.

You're probably the type of person who wants body cams on cops only if they themselves are never captured by the video.

You live in an amazing country, the "police state" you refer to is simply the fact that we, as Canadians have to follow the law. The police don't create them, the government does. If the police act wrong then they should be dealt with. However, assuming the country is any level of police state is silliness. In your eyes any country with police is something you seem to be against.

Obviously you either have not read the Charter or, fail to understand it.

We in Canada don't have police anymore .... we have paramilitaries that wear body armour, carry high powered weapons and have ready access to military style armoured personnel carriers. It has become a wild west show where it is shoot first and ask questions later.

FYI ...... there are numerous laws in this country but the overarching one that trumps all others is the Charter ...... and precisely why when it is not followed individuals such as Mr Bacon's charges for murder were stayed and why we need to compensate Mr Khadr $10.5 million for the abuse under the watchful eyes of the government of the day.

Have a good day!

I'm so sorry that you look at the world and Canada in such a sad way. Remind me how the police officer that reads to kids in school, runs food drives for his community, volunteers with sports teams, is a paramilitary "bad guy."

The movie about SNOWDEN, based on facts, is a revelation as to just how invasive and permeating "watching" is. Although the action concerned mostly the USA, the technology for sharing between agencies is most probable and likely. CSIS would be one of the beneficiaries.

Dvd available from library system. Well worth the time to view.

Once again the endless stream of anti-police videos from the US has begun...

The issue is that a community is getting more police because its growing. Vernon is getting bigger and with that comes the multiple problems we have seen especially this year with the increase in Crime Rankings.

To complain about having more police for a bigger city being able to come to YOUR house if you call 911 makes it a "police state" then I've no answer that will comfort you.

Vernon has become a very large place. Also understand that Vernon police cover the communties of Armstrong, Enderby, Grindrod, Falkland, Coldstream, Lavington, Lumby, Cherryville, BX, and Silverstar as well.

There are bad police, teachers, lawyers, doctors, construction workers etc. etc. I think the majority of police officers are good. Does the RCMP attract a certain type of person....probably, but for the most part they are good and I think we are getting better at weeding out the bad ones.
Police state? Really? As long as you are not doing anything wrong I wouldn't be worried. If they are watching e-mails and Internet traffic to stop child porn rings and terrorism, good. If fact many of the bad police are being weeded out now because there are cameras everywhere. The Robert Dziekański aiport beating, Geoff Mantler kicking the guy in the face in Kelowna etc were all caught on camera. There was an RCMP fired in Richmond for using Police Resources to get a couple women's phone numbers and he was fired because they could bring up his texting history.

Link doesn't work for me and not relevant to costs of police.
