Penticton UBCM

Penticton UBCM

Postby JagXKR » Sep 20th, 2015, 12:49 pm

Maybe it's because of the weekend but I'm amazed there is not a huge uproar regarding this story. Last year, almost to the day, this forum was ablaze (slight exaggeration) in condemnation of the decision and now ALL council, the mayor and the city manager will be attending.
At least this is not an election year and all of council will be around for another 3 years unlike in 2014. Hopefully they will keep expenses down to a minimum and actually come back with useful ideas and meaningful knowledge.

Why use a big word when a diminutive one will suffice.

With our present mayor at the helm, this comes as no surprise. Send everyone; spend spend spend. Too bad we couldn't attact the convention to come HERE. Imagine the bucks that we could save AND add to the convention/tourism business of Penticton.

I agree that it would be nice to hold the conventions throughout the province but that doesn't appear to be the case. Looks like Whislter, Vancouver and Victoria are the main three usual cities to sponsor it.

Future Conventions

2014 Whistler Sept. 22-26 Whistler Conference Centre
2015 Vancouver Sept. 21-25 Vancouver Convention Centre
2016 Victoria Sept. 26-30 Victoria Conference Centre
2017 Vancouver Sept. 25-29 Vancouver Convention Centre
2018 Whistler Sept. 10-14 Whistler Conference Centre
2019 Vancouver Sept. 23-27 Vancouver Convention Centre

We will have to wait and see the final bill. If it's a repeat of last years largess, there will be some comments. After last years extravagance, let's see how resourceful this rookie crew can be in saving taxpayer dollars?
Personally I see no benefit to any more than 4 people attending. The Mayor, CAO, and two Councillors. Any more is redundant and just a paid junket.
Rent a van and drive down. Accommodations at the Best Western Drake or Chateau right downtown for a Corp rate of $140 per night. And from experience from a number of stays, very nice and adequate rooms for anyone except the pompous. Wifi and breakfast included. Meet for breakfast, load into the van and head to the Convention Center. Parking for the day is 20 bucks. Lunch is available at the convention. Meet at the end of the day and van it back to the hotel. Eat at the Hotel restaurant or any of dozens of restaurants within a six block walking radius.
Rinse and repeat for the next day or explain why you could not to the taxpayer that you give the bill to.
And none of the above require a flea bag hotel or McDonalds.
If the drive there and back is too cumbersome to personal interests, perhaps a re evaluation of why they ran for a Councillor position and it's accompanying salary to begin with is in order.
Do not argue with an idiot. He will drag you down to his level and beat you with experience.

The problem with the gene pool is that there is no lifeguard.

Having attended a UBCM, it is most certainly not something an entire Council needs to attend! Send one or two Council members and have them report to Council at one of their regular meetings what has been learned of importance that is relevant and valuable in moving forward in the business of managing the City of Penticton!
If we ask the right questions we can change the world with the right answers
