Personally I ate at White Spot because they were giving $2 for every burger bought. I needed to eat anyway. The second thing is how many people actually donated to Red Cross or what ever other charity was raising money for Ft McMurray? It's easier to do it this way - I know I've probably thrown $25.00 into it, but maybe would have only donated $10 if I made a straight donation.

It's not bad business, it's just a win win for everyone.

Of that $2 donation how much of it do you really think goes to the actual cause?

Also when these businesses do a charity drive like this they're using your money to make themselves look like they're the one's donating the money. I'm pretty sure they use it as a tax write off as well.

Who's name do you think these company's make that donation under? Any company can/will collect and donate that money to the cause, but will receive a tax receipt in their name, that they can deduct from their corporate taxes next year.

According to Philippe Brideau, spokesperson for CRA, “A registered charity can only issue an official donation receipt to the actual donor, the individual or organization that made the gift. If a lump sum is donated without detailed (individual) donor information, the charity will not be able to issue any receipt.”

Businesses collecting small donations should track them separately from general revenue, and submit them, in full to the designated charity. The charity issues no tax receipt. Sometimes, businesses “match” donor dollars with funds of their own; in those cases they get a receipt, but only for the portion they funded themselves. So, as long as no one cheats, there is no direct financial advantage to the business.

<snip> In summary, if a reputable business asks you to give an extra dollar for Sick Kids, the hospital likely gets the money and the business gets brownie points. If someone runs a bake sale with “proceeds” to your favourite cause, the charity is better off if you write them a cheque, get the receipt yourself, and stay on your diet. <snip>

^^^That's all great IF everyone follows all of the rules all of the time. I have personal knowledge of some that don't.

*bleep*...you're high. Quoting an op/ed from the "star" magazine is hilarious. And the CRA rep quoted in the story didn't really clarify anything.

Businesses collecting "small" donations on behalf of a registered charity are not given or allowed to issue donation receipts.

Businesses such as Safeway, collecting "small" donations, but make a huge donation to the charity, might not receive an official donation receipt, but are still allowed to claim the donation amount. And while you can claim the donations personally, you will need to provide the receipts from the place you made the donation to. ie. A Safeway receipt for your groceries that shows the donation on the receipt.

Of course this is a benefit to the business collecting. They absolutely claim all the money they donate, based on what they collected from their customers. Big tax credit! Just because the "small" donations are not technically required to be tracked, they of course get claimed.

Hey, the charity benefits from the business donating. That's not a bad thing.
