Cyclists doing wine tours
A friend of mine from Naramata told me about cyclists doing wine tours along the Naramata Bench, at first I thought that’s not a bad idea, UNTIL this past Saturday while driving out to Naramata I encountered a group of 5 cyclists not wearing helmets doing wine tours. This was right by Hillside and there were 4 heading south in the southbound lane and one young lady heading south in the northbound lane. Luckily I had slowed down enough to figure out what might be happening as the group of 4 in the southbound lane decided to cross the highway and try and beat the traffic and get into Hillside. The young lady heading south in the northbound lane was cheering them on. How #$!@ing stupid is this. Someone is going to get hurt or worse. Who in their right mind would come up with this idea. Maybe if Naramata Road had adequate bike lanes perhaps, but the way it is right now and with the amount of increased tourist traffic it’s an accident just waiting to happen and it will. Unbelievable!

And why not? Do we cover our eyes and ears about drinking and driving? Is drinking and cycling any different?

Cuz it will devolve into a cyclists vs pedestrians vs drivers thread like it always does.

Well I mean, it is a little bit different. A drunk person on a bike is going to do ALOT less damage then someone drunk in a car. A drunk person walking home could be just as reckless as the story you wrote.
I do like the idea of a cycling wine tour, or using cycling as a way of getting home if drank to much. But I do have to agree that the area in Naramata isn't a great area to "share the road". I have heard of a couple people doing the bike wine tour, and seem to popular. Hopefully if the idea really gets going, the city will invest some time and money into creating a safer path.

Re: Cyclists doing wine tours
Are these organized cycle/wine tours? or just tourists renting bikes in Penticton and then following the maps from the info centre?
If It's the former, we need to make sure that the riders are briefed about how they should be riding and reacting to traffic ... no need to be idiots out there ... while I don't agree with the idea that those roads are not safe for cyclists I know that as a cyclist you have to be more aware when on those roads with drivers who love taking the curves at speed ...
If it's just random tourists ... I wish I had a good suggestion ... but I can't say that I do yet ...
No, this doesn't need to evolve into a car vs bike vs pedestrian thread ... just had one of those in the Central OK forum last weekend ... I'll do my best to keep on topic ...

Unorganized tours. I might also add that as a driver one has to be more aware when on those roads with cyclists who love riding two - three abreast including corners .... just sayin' Spooker. And no let's not turn this into a them against us against whoever thread. I stand my ground - from what I witnessed this is an accident waiting to happen.

I agree with you on that ... as a year-round cyclist all too often I have to shake my head at people who aren't thinking about their safety enough ... if there are any lines painted on the road it's a good indication as to where cars are likely to drift when cornering, not enough people know to pay attention to that ...

I have to chime in and say that there is also a great deal of arrogance displayed to traffic flow as well by many cyclists. It seems that their right to be on the road supersedes all vehicular traffic and the motoring public is forced to the lowest common denominator of the speed of a bike. It is technically an infraction for a motor vehicle to impede more than five vehicles behind them without pulling over at the nearest safe point to do so. Why is it we have to endure miles of 15kph when a bike can pull over and let traffic pass when there is even 24 inches of road shoulder?

all we need is a bunch of half drunk people riding bikes on tight roads... bad idea. I wonder if a person could sue the winery if they had a accident on their bikes after drinking at their tasting bar

How would it be any different from people being in a car or cars?
Drinking and driving/riding impaired is a bad idea no matter what ... heck, walking if you've had too much is a bad idea along that road ...

What's the big deal? It's better than having them drive. And, drunk biking has been occuring for generations with very little injury. Typical Penticton, no fun allowed.
