Who put the muzzle on???

Post by southy »

Ok lets try and figure this out. During the election campaign way back when - remember that? Those who were in the running for council and won had quite a bit to say. Just a few quotes from the 2014 election:

Helena Konanz: Told those in attendance she has been your independent voice on council, voting against electrical rates going up and for increasing funding to the economic development office. She was the first councillor to support Boonstock, she said, and will continue to promote Penticton as a college town.

Andre Martin: Described his platform as capitalizing on existing opportunities, creating new opportunities and planning for the future. He stated I really do believe in Penticton, I am passionate about Penticton.

Max Picton: Told the crowd this is a pivotal election, and we are in need of a balanced council. Picton, who stated he grew up in Penticton tourism, said in addition there needs to be a balanced economy, with the troubling gap with young adults addressed.

Tarik Sayeed: Stated he supports economic growth through embracing technology, environmental care and social belonging. He believes Penticton has the opportunity to be recognized as a role model for Canada and this is what he will strive for. Leading as a role model instills pride for myself, my family and our community, he said.

Judy Sentes: Recognized the achievements of council in recent years, including completing the Martin Street upgrade, the first phase of the Okanagan Lake waterfront development and being recognized federally for fiscal responsibility. She stated municipal government must remain approachable and strive for the will of the whole.

Campbell Watt: Stated he has served on several boards and committees and believes he has the experience to be effective. He understands, he said, that there are three sides to every story, and he is capable of finding a solutions, in particular to challenging and contentious issues faced by the city.

And believe it or not folks these individuals did indeed get elected. What I want to know is where did their voices go? The same voices that told us why they were deserving of being elected and how they would move Penticton forward. Who put the muzzle on them?? Now Mayor Jak - voice of council - voice of our city says we need to spend thousands to improve community engagement. Can someone tell me what the hell community engagement actually means?? We have elected officials who now it would appear cannot engage with the general public at least not publicly? Hummm. We have a communications person whose job I take it is to communicate happenings at city hall and within the city itself. I'm still confused. Then to make matters worse we are told we did have an engagement manager but she didn't work out and we will never know why. So the city will now hire a new engagement manager.

Other than speaking up at council meetings will council members continue to serve without an opinion or voice? Something tells me yes. Just two more years folks. Two more years.,

Their voices went nowhere because like any other campaign promises they are broad sweeping statements and public and media rarely ask them to elaborate /explain what they mean and how they intend to deliver thus giving them carte blanche with little accountability. For example what is ecomomic growth? Some may consider skaha lake park water slides part of economic growth. Others not so much.

This is what the city is looking for with the engagement position:

I have to believe that there is internal overlap existing with some of the items within the a above job description.

Any regrets on your voting choices southy? You were warned lol. A do over would be nice huh?
Do not argue with an idiot. He will drag you down to his level and beat you with experience.

So hear is a bit more about why Mayor Jak wants an engagement specialist - check the line about contentious issues. Could be interesting times ahead.

I read the article and came to the conclusion had the city held a referendum they would have found out exactly how the citizens felt about the park waterslides. Especially when save the park people were willing to pay for said referendum.
