Another Car Another Front Door
http://www.castanet.net/news/Penticton/ ... hair-salon
One of these days someone is going to die....
91? Comon time for some mandatory testing for people over 65... Boy there have been some people that can barely get in a nd out of their cars and walk to a store yet they drive a machine that can kill just because they want to drive...
"Community policing coordinator Rick Dellebuur said Tuesday it was a case where the driver thought he was going backwards, but ended up going forward. "
with that type of force to jump the curb and into a door means that I do not want to behind him if he was actually backing up....Hammer down to backup....crazy!!
Take his license away!

Re: Another Car Another Front Door
How many of these "accidents" have led to any sort of charges? I suppose most of these happen off roadways and in parking lots and such laws don't apply?
Even my father agrees with me when I say "if age doesn't diminish ones ability to drive, then someone with literally a half century of driving experience should have the least reason for making such tragic mistakes". Certainly I'm not making excuses for younger drivers doing dumb But rather that at the age of 91 (possibly 75 licensed years behind the wheel) mixing up the gas and brake is pretty unbelievable.
My uncle is turning 65 and told me that he hasn't driven in nearly five years since a head injury left him nearly blind in his left eye. He can only see out of the top 1/4 and he knows he'd be nothing but a danger on the road. It sucks to be dependant on others (were from a town with pretty crap public transit) but he does it for the sake of others.

Actually a parking lot is still considered part of the road systems and all traffic laws apply in them as they would on a regular road.
From the BC Motor Vehicle Act (article c is the one that applies):
"highway" includes
(a) every highway within the meaning of the Transportation Act ,
(b) every road, street, lane or right of way designed or intended for or used by the general public for the passage of vehicles, and
(c) every private place or passageway to which the public, for the purpose of the parking or servicing of vehicles, has access or is invited,
but does not include an industrial road

I'm sure you know people who are this age and older and do you really think they all need testing?
I agree that once we reach a certain age the possibility of reduced cognizance and reactions certainly deteriorate and we need a system that will determines who is not safe to drive.
I think that our medical system should be held accountable for determining those who should either have their driving privileges taken away of be given further testing.
So I saw a bumper sticker today that said, I'm a Veterinarian so I drive like an animal.

Re: Another Car Another Front Door
My father turned 96 on his last birthday and stopped driving by his own choice about two years ago, shortly after they had renewed his driver's license with everyone's blessings. He stopped driving more due to a confidence thing, the excessive number of rude and aggressive drivers on the road in Kelowna had him thinking it was just too darn dangerous out there to risk any of the time he has left for the sake of some self-important hot head who thinks the spaces between stoplights are drag strips.

Just this morning some old guy paid for his coffee in the McDonald's drive thru, then proceeded to drive right past the pick up window lol. Has anyone had that sense of fear when you are in a drive thru and the person in front of you puts their car in reverse?

I've said it dozens of times:
Come 70yo, every time you renew your license you should have to take the test again. Not perfect, but certainly a step in the right direction. That way the competent drivers can keep driving while the incompetent are weeded out BEFORE they cause an accident.

This argument has been done to death. Mandatory renewal testing at 65 or 70 is ludicrous. Police officers, family, or doctors can get licences revoked. To throw everyone into the same bag because of age and not cognizant ability is silly. May as well test everyone from teens to oldies every time their licence comes up. That would be the only non-discriminatory way and it may remove a lot more bad drivers for a lot more reasons from the road. However, just think of all the whining about "just another tax grab" that we would all have to endure.

Silly as it may sound - it just might save a few more lives. This is a serious issue that needs to be addressed. Self-denial about physical and mental health plays into this big time. Who wants to admit they are aging and that they could have a problem/s that just might have an effect on their drivers license being renewed or not.

Your assuming there is family that cares, an encounter with police before an accident, and doctor visits. I guess the rest will just fall thru the cracks until a crash without some established mandatory testing point.
