Tax increase re: policing in Oliver

Post by dirtbiker »

Oliver council has unanimously decided to increase taxes to cushion the blow expected after the next census regarding policing costs. This census is expected to show the population of Oliver to be over the 5 000 person threshold where the town must pay 70% of RCMP costs versus the 30% they now enjoy.
Excellent decision council!

Prudent foresight. Unfortunately it will have a big backlash from the myopic non-planners.
Why use a big word when a diminutive one will suffice.

This is a flawed formula for RCMP funding. It should be a more graduated increase as population increases. What rationale can justify a jump from 30% to 70% because a community has 5000 people instead of 4999. This is just plain stupid. A more graduated system that reflects actual resources required, ie boots on the ground and supporting staff and equipment needs to be developed.
Osoyoos went over 5k by what.....12 people? So now 12 people have raised the tax burden 40% of the policing cost for what will be the same number of boots on the ground?? I doubt very much that policing levels will change at all in Osoyoos for the extra 12 people that live in the catchment area.
Do not argue with an idiot. He will drag you down to his level and beat you with experience.

The system is indeed flawed. Maybe Horgan will come to the rescue. Well, after first getting a committee to recommend a committee to study the situation of course.
Until then they are doing what is necessary under the current rules.
