Like an ominous scene from a Hitchcock film, a flock of dead birds littering the road left a Castanet reader seeking answers.

On Saturday March 10, Naramata-area resident Mary found traffic on Naramata Road not far from La Frenz Winery suddenly slowing to a crawl. She soon discovered why.

"There were what seemed like hundreds of birds dead on the road and around it," Mary said.

She identified the birds as starlings, an invasive species in the Okanagan, and snapped a photo. Her daughter then sent the picture to Castanet in the hope that an explanation could be found.

The Canadian Wildlife Service was very interested in the information, and have set out to conduct an investigation.

"Anytime three or more dead birds are found in an area, we want to know about that," said Tanya Luszcz, with the Canadian Wildlife Service.

A local provincial worker will be heading to the site Tuesday to collect any birds that may remain in order to conduct tests. Possible causes could include accidental poisoning from fermented fruit or a disease.

Luszcz said that members of the public who come across dead wild birds are urged to contact the government to help aid their efforts in tracking wild deaths and diseases.

To report a dead bird, call 1-866-431-BIRD.

The birds seem to be too spread out to have been hit by a vehicle. :135:

Do you think that happened LOL. Not likely if you've even read the story

Now if this is only effecting starlings and no other species, then I say okay no problem.

only if it's effecting starlings though

Yes I do.
While driving my work van I killed over 50 starlings ( yes i got out and counted them). I had to pull them out of my grill etc.
Its not uncommon for them to swarm in front of vehicles.

If they are drunk from fermented fruit, they may not get out of the way quick enough. That sounds reasonable!

Bird Death Explained

Post by Jlabute »

Does the findings of this bird death investigation seem odd?
What appears to be ~40 dead birds covering a road is answered by : A truck hit them.
Birds usually don’t hang out on the road in large flocks and if they do, they tend to avoid vehicles pretty quick.

I'm guessing that since they were starlings that they were in a "murmuration".

I suppose that is the only thing that could explain it outside of disease, vast numbers of starlings and 40 flew into the vehicle.

That was a my first thought when I read about it. Those things are a pain, but they are amazing to watch when they do that. :D

Personally though, I’ve never seen that many. Do we get murmurations around orchards or other areas?
