Use of new Summerland RCMP building ?

Use of new Summerland RCMP building ?

Postby my5cents » Sep 20th, 2018, 1:12 pm

So, those who supported the new RCMP building ? Is a Penticton member going to just drive to Summerland to work, and they have a whole building to use while visiting ?

From that link, De Jager states that there are no holding cells in Summerland? Does this guy even know what is really happening in the South Okanagan?

And while De Jager told Castanet last week the new Summerland detachment doesn't have holding cells, Waterman pointed out Thursday the facility does in fact have its own holding cells, which have never been manned due to financial difficulties.

Shouldn't the Superintendent of the area, when talking about an RCMP facility only14 kms from his office know if the building has cells ????

Am I alone in wondering about the ability of RCMP management?

Already, if there is a call in Meadow Valley/Falder, the RCMP come from Penticton, not Summerland which is 14 kms closer. So 11kms away or 25 ? Forget about any general patrolling of the area.

One would think that the Superindenent would know whats going on; guess not. This guy has not impressed too many people since his arrival including some local politicians.

The Meadow Valley/Faulder situation is indeed not good. A summerland cop cannot attend; has to be a Rural member, usually coming from Penticton. Definitely a delay in response times.

"The advantage is that it’s 24 hours," South Okanagan RCMP Supt. Ted De Jager said. "The disadvantage is… you don’t have that consistency, which is what you enjoy and what you want from a community perspective.

"And that’s the way it’s staying," he added, repeating there's "no discussion right now" to actually pursue a policing hub.

Keremeos Mayor Manfred Bauer and Summerland Mayor Peter Waterman took issue to the policing hub idea at Thursday's regional board meeting.

Ain't gonna happen in the near future.
Summerland will continue to utilize their new bullet proof steel clad building.

Interesting. I have personally been at the site of a call for RCMP on the Princeton backroad, after midnight, which was attended by a Summerland RCMP. So I wonder how these decisions are made?

I wonder in your case, if the Rural member just happened to be in Summerland at the time. They could have been at Apex or Twin Lakes just as easily. At least that's the way it always has been, unless its changed nowadays.

I would expect that if it was something serious and a Summerland car was available it would head to the call, but the actual call, reports, investigation would be handled by the rural member working out of the Pent Detachment.

I am dumbfounded by these statements of response origins. Is this an RCMP structure issue or a labour agreement issue?

They trade personnel numbers. It's all contracted with the municipality.

An area that is designated "rural" is policed by a member who is desinated to be a rural member. For example (don't know if it's the same now) Big White is rural, but you'd think the closesr detachment would be responsible. No, it was West Kelowna. Then some trading went on and they gave Midway a member if Midway would take Big White. Sounds crazy, I know.

Thatmay have changed now I have no idea.

Well, I don't know what to think now about your statements if things may have changed now and you have no idea? Why would you have even posted something you had no idea about except what was the past practice and "may" have changed?

Ya, things may have changed, maybe West Kelowna went back to covering Big White. Maybe it's the same. So you figure everyone who posts a fact is ? what the person in charge of the entity being discussed, and is relaying complete up to date varified and current information ?

The basis of my comment was that rural policing is very unusual and inconsistent with what one would think it was.

I think saying "things may have changed was being up front".

I'll leave my reply at that, because if I said what I think of your comment it would be deleted.

Fair enough but it would seem that the RCMP management system needs a very serious audit of operations with regards to efficiency in the delivery of service. I am also suspect that a great deal of this problem stems from the "elitism/arrogance" that seems to be a core character trait of the RCMP from top to bottom of most members.
