Neighbours complained and said 'what’s going on here Airbnb

People still breaking rules, RDOS has to get harsh and heavily fine these Airbnb's that are operating illegally.

From that article.

where a home on the property has been rented to vacationers this year without a permit.

renovations were also done to convert the attic into bedrooms, which was done without a building permit.

"The owner contacted us [in July] and we outlined the expectations in order to bring the property into compliance," a report from the RDOS said. "They did not respond to our entry request and have since ignored further attempts to resolve the issues."

This is more about "building codes" and the district did not get their cut. It's all about the money that the RDOS did not receive for their approval.

The article also states that, it was a targeted property.

pretty crazy and stupid to risk your insurance on such an expensive property...

but again, just another property owner with the belief that it's their property and bylaws and building permits don't apply to them...hope they get fined big time

Exactly, I always find it amusing when these individuals think they are above the law.

Do you have a copy of their insurance policy ? Who is the underwriter of that policy ? AND no, I don't mean the broker.

Someone that has the where-for-all to pay $2M for a rental house, also has the intelligence to have adequate insurance in place.

Since when do insurance companies write the "laws" ?

This is not a "mortgage helper" rental of a spare room, this is a hotel trying to fly under the radar. No reason at all in my mind that the owners shouldn't be held to the same requirements as anyone in the mainstream accommodations industry.

I agree, but the RDOS has admitted that this property was "targeted" because they did not receive their permit/inspection fees.

If the owner had paid off the appropriate officials, there would be no issues.

I don't think it's about the money. Had the owner jumped through the appropriate hoops then the place would have been properly inspected to insure compliance with health, safety, and building codes. Unlikely that he would have been able to "buy" his way past regulatory requirements.

Do ALL of the current AirB&Bs also meet the same requirements, or are they just allowed a "pass" due to their smaller size of operation?
This is a pretty big operation and therefore the target is also large. The press have also singled this operation out due to it's size and scope of operation.
If this was just another ma & pa rental, it would not be worthy of a page 12 mention.

What neighbours complained? Look up the property on google maps and there are no neighbours close enough to be bothered by anything going on on this property.

IMO its valid for RDOS to want the building permits in place. That protects future owners and occupants to ensure work done was done adequately and to code.

Kinda funny that Tom Siddon is speaking up about anything now that his term is ending. He's done diddly squat up until now.

The satellite data on Google Maps is typically 3 years old.

The article is one of many. Regardless who is the author. Most voters and tax payers are welcoming the new regulations, but believe more can be done by holding companies like Airbnbs accountable. Why this house was so called targeted because it beds 20 guests PER NIGHT not location. High volume. Avoiding regulations and policies is not fair. Why should they be able to side step the current system?

This house was sitting on a 38? acre property. That's a pretty big lot. Could be worse, they could have turned it into a feed lot for pigs or beef. Just imagine the fly's that the neighbours would have to endure, as well as the semi's full of drop-off and pick-up of animals.

But apparently not the intelligence to follow the bylaws.
