You are kidding aren't you? There isn't a study around that says people have no lack of judgement when they have been drinking. They just don't realize they have lack of judgement. I agree, lots of people THINK they're just fine, but I would challenge any one of them to an eye hand coordination test or a speed of response test any day.

Not to speak for OKkayak - but I think you’ve missed the point, that being not everyone devolves into drunken stupidity every time they drink - some of us are capable of drinking responsibly.

Pretty hard to sort the facts from the contents of a poorly written story.

Yes, the woman was a mother, it's confusing that the writer, Alanna Kelly decided to continue to call her "mother" and "West Kelowna mother"

Headline : "Mom run over by friend". Right away, don't you expect the story is going to involve children of the mother, who perhaps had a friend visiting ??

Do we describe everyone who is a mother or a father. "Father involved in Accident of Highway" What ???????

When a descriptor, such as "mother" or "father" is used in a story, isn't that usually because the story also relates to the mother or father's children. "Father run down in cross walk while taking his children to school"

Also I don't think you can take much stock on "Police in Summerland are considering criminal charges". They like any police are investigating and once the investigation is completed, will submit a report to Crown Charge Approval and Crown will either approve or not approve charges. Please don't loose any sleep about the poor use of the word "considering".

[painting the picture of a Summerland Mountie, rubbing his chin, "gee,,, what should I do, charge, don't charge, charge, don't charge, trying to make up my mind, it's so hard !]

Since the female who was injured was from West Kelowna and the incident happened in Summerland, I'll speculate that she is NOT the homeowner. She was a "fellow guest" with the alleged driver of the truck.

This is a real mess. Everyone is keying on "he should be charged", "the police should do this", "the police should do that".

Yes, they should and probably will. They have to first determine what evidence they have. Obtain statements of witnesses, give the alleged driver the opportunity to make a statement. Impound the truck and see what if any forensic evidence is on it.

BUT the REAL trouble is the civil case.

You have likely very serious injuries to the woman, to what extent and what lasting consequences will take time to determine.

ICBC will be involved.

A nightmare for the homeowner. It's called "Host Liability". Lot's of detail required. What did they serve did they cut off drinking, did they have snacks and non-alcoholic beverages available, what provisions did they make to insure nobody left driving intoxicated.

Sounds like the alleged driver was very intoxicated, the statements of other party goers may shed some light on that. If ICBC can prove impairment, even without criminal charges they can breach coverage. With a criminal conviction, it's a no brainer.

It will likely cost zillions of dollars for the driver and likely the host.

Some think (I thought so) that if the host does not serve liquor they are exempt for those who attend and drink their own (BYOB). Not so, the courts have held "In hosting a party, you have created the forum for others to drink. You must be as vigilant as if you were serving the alcohol yourself".

Lots we don't know, perhaps the host had arranged for everyone to stay the night, and the truck driver went rogue and left when expected to remain the night.

As for GoFundMe, after a 7 day waiting period, the victim can place an ICBC claim under her No Fault coverage.

Down the road likely there will also be a civil trial, a costly one for some.

The news dept. does not read the forum. If any of you want to complain about the article go here: https://www.castanet.net/contactus/

Scroll to the bottom and chose the "News Complaints" in the drop down box.

when I sit down to get "my beer on " that's all I wanna do ... NOTHING else ...

I don't chop wood , I don't wanna bake a cake , I don't wanna do my scrap booking ETC....

That would also include operating ANY kind of machinery . Just like driving a car , it would remind me about working ...

For some people Tony ,

It's not about judgement . it's about not wanting to be bothered with the hassle .

I knew I was going to mess that up - I fixed my quote to read "newborn". Yes a 5 month old is an infant but a newborn is new for up to a month or two. So there ya go, everyone makes mistakes. And not having first hand knowledge but depending on facebook etc. I'm not going to email the news department. I only do that when I have absolute facts to back me up. I expect the story to evolve and read updates with new information and that's good enough for me. I just can't imagine how anyone involved is coping with this horrible accident - not a great start to 2019.
Fancy this, Fancy that and by the way, T*t for Tat

On that note ...https://www.castanet.net/news/Vernon/24 ... 7-accident

I know it's non relevant to this thread because it's about booze but ...... Think about it people .

Booze isn't the only scourge on our roads .

Edit to add .. The original story made NO mention of alcohol but rather a driver trying to pass two other vehicles AND driving erratically .

Every news article supplied by Castanet should provide a "report error" at the end of each article. No links or drop box navigation should be required.
The only reason print news still exists in the Okanagan is because of the amateur news reporting. I mean this seriously. Is there not even some kind of editor with at least a Degree in English that reads the articles before they get posted?

My writing skills do suck & I fully admit that, castanet news could really use a few proofreaders.

There are tons a people who drink responsibly. That's not what OKKayak said. They said they drive better when they are RIPPED. That's not having a beer or two, that's having a friggin' dozen. And NOBODY drives better when they are ripped.
