Officials left themselves open to its use when this was said:

"We're not saying that you absolutely cannot go on there, we're just requesting that people understand that it actually technically is not open yet, and you're kind of there at your own risk," Boot said.

Actually the article stated:
There is quite a bit of work to be done, but it's not going to hurt the surface. They’ll have to shut down for a small period of time to do the finishing on it...
I take that to mean there is still work to be done on it (the surface) but the kids playing on it now won't damage it.

Actually, what Tony said is actually right. It's okay to use it because using it now will not hurt the surface. And it's mostly landscaping that is needed to be completed.

Again, Fancy, you are contradicting (twisting) what someone posted, then just stating the exact same thing they said.

TylerM4 wrote:OK, I get it the calls were over the top but to play devil's advocate.

They were kids breaking into a gated off construction site. If you witnessed some kids breaking into a construction site, would you potentially wonder if they're there to steal tools or vandalize equipment?

You ASSUME that some old codger is looking out the window seeing 20 kids happily playing in a skate park and decided to call 911. More likely what led up to the call was seeing a handful kids hoping the fence to access a locked construction site.

Don't you think you are overstating/misrepresenting the facts just a bit?

If it had been as you described "some kids breaking into a construction site... to steal tools or vandalize equipment?" then yeah, that'd be a problem.

However, that isn't even remotely the case. It was kids walking into a losely fenced playground in a highly visible area, in their school yard, a block from the RCMP station to play in a park.

You can't describe a situation as if it was something entirely different and say "then it would be bad" because that isn't what happened.

If they had been throwing rocks through shop windows and beating puppies with sticks that would have been bad also... but they weren't.

Stick to the facts.

You sound like one of the curtain twitching curmudgeons that we are taking about.

*removed* What if the people that were calling in took the time to look around and use the little common sense to realize there's nothing to worry about and not call 911.

You totally missed the point.

I didnt contradict anyone as I wasn't referring to landscaping. Construction elements weren't referring to landscaping either.

I love to see kids having fun outdoors. My first thoughts however with the story in the news was not grumpy old folks but rather kids breaching construction cordoned facilities and the liability and lawsuit(s) that may have been brought on from a severe injury from a yet unsanctioned facility.

Summerland does not have an after hours non-emergency number. Penticton does but not Summerland. I was told by the person working the desk that you would have to call 911 if you need to dispatch police, even for a noise complaint. Bylaw doesn’t work evenings or weekends either. So yeah, 911 is the only option for Summerland. Ridiculous.

I couldn't understand why anyone would call 911 to report these kids until hearing Chimera explain it, thank you.

With todays communication systems any non-emergency problem should be easily passed along to any district that does not have after hours service rather than clogging up the 911 line which was designed expressly to handle real emergencies ?

Official grand opening this weekend looks like it was very well attended. Great to see such a well needed facility officially open for Summerland and surrounding area youth (and the odd grey on a tray) to enjoy.

Its a good venue and I'm happy for Summerland, however I did notice that both Castanet and the H@rald featured the main pic showing someone not wearing a helmet (most others seemed to be). Pretty sure that the rules of the park insist on wearing them. If I was the media, I would not post a pic of someone not abiding by the rules. Just my thoughts.

Kinks getting ironed out, rules in place. A wonderful place for the kids in Summerland.

I haven't actually been to the site since it was finished but I would think that the City would put up "helmets required" signage to avoid liability claims in future. Only makes sense. Maybe they won't be policing that rule all the time but to have it in place seems logical.
