I have to wonder why they are using copper downspouts. Copper isn’t cheap.

Government Project. That kind of explains that cost is no object.

Exactly my thought as well. Our Gov' is now in the same league as 10k toilets in the US military.

Copper downspouts on a social housing project? The *bleep* that signed off on these plans/blueprints should be publicly questioned and shamed.

How much would a piece of copper like this cost? Like wholesale, retail, black market?
Just wondering how it could be justified on a BC Housing project, and how enticing it would be to would be thieves.

Copper drainpipe is really expensive. You see it on million dollar homes. You don't see it on most houses because of the cost and the theft factor. Those who have copper usually only do the eaves trough as it is way harder (but not impossible) to steal. The downpipes go away all the time.

Looks like copper gutters are $15 to $25/Foot

This house in West Kelowna has them.

A quick search reveals that 10 feet of copper downspout is about $110 to buy and 10 feet of galvanized is about $12 to buy, so this subsidized housing project chose a pretty option roughly 10 times more expensive than it had to be.
Nice. Seriously. Where are our governments priorities??

I don't see the reasoning behind using Copper. Won't it turn green in a short period of time or is that part of the effect?

And what effect might that be? That the Green party had something to do with this? :130:

You really have to wonder who makes these decisions and better yet who signs off on payment without questioning. Our money at work once again. Can't wait till this group of idiots is voted out once and for all.

There is absolutely no reason to use copper. 99.8% of downspouts in new construction are aluminum. Like copper it does not rust. There is no structural or longevity reason why copper would be chosen over aluminum. Even UV inhibited PVC or similar plastic should have been a preferred choice.
Wonder if the stainless steel kitchen sinks will be down at the local scrap steel vendors as soon as residents move in as well?
