Are you voting not *for* a party, but AGAINST a party?

Post by Hermes »

That's me, BTW.

There are no Libertarians, Conservatives, Sex Party or Christian Heritage Party in my area and Progressive Conservatives and Social Credit no longer exist. So, I voted (advance polling) for the lesser of evils. Liberals, no thank you.

In the past I have voted in civic elections for someone who is essentially a Communist (Harry Rankin), and in provincial elections for a moderate state socialist (Sven Robinson), as well as many libertarian and conservative candidates. My vote depends on four factors...

1. the person - no preference in my riding.
2. party platform - welfare rates the Liberals will never raise it seems.
3. likelihood of *party* winning - there are only two
4. visceral issues - 24K Syrians immigrating without preference to those most at risk... Yezedis and Christians, plus procastinating about legalization of cannabis (I personally cannot take the substance, but taxed it could support the province financially).

Thus, I can't support Trudeau's party because he is either insincere or foolish. And I don't care if this is provincial versus federal. Same party. I want none of them unless my local Liberal MLA is fantastic. The incumbent is NDP, so I voted for her, even though NDP is not my first choice.

In my riding I had only three choices: the party I loathe because they have no principles and best represent academics and big business, an ecology party, and social-democrats (with too close ties to big unions). I don't like any of them really. Well, I like some aspects of the Green Party. It is perhaps the only electable party where the leader seems to understand that Canadians are being indebted to interest to private banks, but she is just talk about changing Bank of Canada policy. Blah, blah, blah - no systemic change.

In US election I would have voted for Trump or Bernie (less likely to get assassinated). I dislike Hillary even more than Christie Clark. Liberals in Canada remind me too much of Democrats in USA. Obama has his pluses and minuses, but Hillary I could not stomach. Christie and Hillary - separated at birth.

I see no wisdom in voting out an existing government unless it's reasonable to expect their replacemnet will do something better.

The "Let's get her!" attitude which is being promoted almost entirely by NDP supporters is a form of cheap manipulation in my opinion, a strategy to elect an NDP government despite a weak (and expensive) platform. I have yet to see any argument in favour of an NDP government worth considering that could stand on its own in absence of criticism for the current government. In short, at present it looks like hate and muck-raking is all they've got.

Personally, I'm of the mind that just about all politicians are crooks, BC's Liberals and NDP are no exception. With that in mind I try to look past the muckraking and look at the basics, are rank & file British Columbians prospering under the current regime, and if elected, could the "hopefuls" improve on that?

I guess I'm voting against. I'm a Conservative and since there is no viable Conservative option (high time that there was) my choices are limited. I agree that Christy and Hillary could be sisters and that the Democrats, oh I mean the Liberals have had their day. Any Government that's in place too long get complacent and stupid (well the Liberals were already, you know.. stupid..) Just look what happened to Harper or what happened in Alberta.

So we need a change and although I would love to see a strong Independent movement (so they aren't beholding to their party leaders whims) that doesn't appear to be happening. As a result I only have one choice. Vote Green and hope for a minority government with the balance of power in the hands of the Greens. That would be interesting, and for those Liberal lap dogs that say "nothing will get done" I say nothing has gotten done so what's the difference. Even when her royal hindness graces us with her presence in Victoria, which is rare, nothing gets accomplished except more Tax Payer funded advertising trying to convenience us otherwise.

So even if you like the current government and you think they are doing best for everyone. You wont vote for them?

That's how I too read her/his habit, and I too am perplexed. I understand (though no longer practice) people who abstain: 'Voting only encourages them', but found Maryjane's statement odd. Perhaps it was a typo. MJ?

Well that's a krock.

We all have a tendency to exaggerate a bit now and then, but that's an out and out lie.

There's a thread going with a list of just some of the things that have been done under Liberal rule.

The list for the NDP which is the only other party to have opportunity to do something, is non existent.

Sorry I stand corrected, you are right, they have done "something". I forgot about hiring hundreds more useless bureaucrats, padding their salaries with several raises while fighting against anyone else getting one, spending millions and millions of tax dollars in "false" advertising trying to convince us what a great job their are doing, etc.etc. etc..

What I meant was the BC Liberals have spent a record amount of money over the last 16 years and have accomplished nothing of value to anyone but their corporate sponsors, is that better..??

Nope. It's still blatant BS.

I've never seen a time that I've noted as much improvement to roads, hospitals, and education, as I have with the Liberals in power.

Denying it or trivializing it is not going to change the fact that it happened.

People aren't blind and can see for themselves. They won't be swayed by a few deniers with an agenda.

come on man, you know this is complete nonsense. Only the most die-hard blind sheep could make this statement, and even they would be shaking their heads while typing it.
