Tourism

Post by Frisk »

I heard that the closed beaches and poor boating conditions are driving tourists away from the okanagan.
I wonder what kind of impact it'll have on the tourism industry this summer?

I imagine that this will be a huge blow to our tourism industry this year. I have family that comes from Ontario every summer, and I'm sure we can find plenty of other activities for them, but many tourists will look for other places to vacation where they can enjoy beaches & boating.

This is also what happens when a community fails to maintain diversity.

We will get tourists, lots of them will bring boats. Lots of them will launch and use them. There will be lots of wave action damage and complaints.
I would like to be proven wrong but I have been watching what happens for years.

If I did a quick drive around I bet I could find about 20 kms of roads I could just back the boat in from.

...and I imagine there are people who will do exactly that without regard for anything but their own personal enjoyment.

Hopefully they'll stay away and locals can enjoy their daily commutes and find things to do in peace. Like a normal city and not one subject to an annual invasion of ignorant imbeciles.

We just got home from a photo tour starting from Popular Point ending at Gyro. There are many people suffering from this flood situation right on the lakeshore for sure, there's flooding on Richter Street and a few others.

Lots of photos to upload and process.

Just got back from Rotary Marsh on Water Street.

Three things are standing out right now.

1. Extraordinary high water levels are impacting shoreline eco-systems.
2. There has never been so few tourists at this time of year as now. We used to talk to them all the time, now there aren't any.
3. The ugliness of the Orange barriers just can't be denied. Ugly in all ways. Even that they let water seep under them.

If anyone wants to see flooding pix, PM me.

Less than a foot of water before it's hitting walkway docks.

And we've been there a few times now, no tourists. Unusual.
