so, anyone going to rush out and buy this tablet?

After days of speculation and rumors, Microsoft's major announcement has just been unveiled at a press event in Los Angeles: a Surface tablet. We suspected the company might be working on its own tablet, and Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer revealed the device on stage at the Milk Studios in Los Angeles today. Discussing Microsoft's history with Windows, Xbox, and Kinect, Ballmer introduced a video of the company's hardware products over the years before unveiling Windows 8's companion, a Microsoft Surface.

Microsoft's Steven Sinofsky took to the stage to describe the hardware of Microsoft's Surface tablet. There will be two options for Microsoft's Surface PC, one powered by Intel's 22nm Ivy Bridge chips for a "full Windows" experience or a Surface powered by an ARM chipset and Windows RT. The Windows RT version is just 9.3mm thin, weighs 1.5lbs, includes a built-in kickstand and is the first PC with a magnesium case, according to Microsoft. It will ship in 32GB or 64GB versions.

Microsoft's Intel-based Surface tablet will run Windows 8 Pro, with a thickness of 13.5mm, a weight of 1.9lb, and USB 3.0 support. This particular version will ship with either 64GB or 128GB storage. The Intel version will also include digital ink support through a pen that magnetizes to the body of the tablet .Both of Microsoft's Surface tablets include a 10.6-inch display, and optional Touch and Type covers.

Not me either. Have had my iPad for awhile now and don't want to have to buy all my apps, movies, and music again (or wait for similar apps to be developed). Apple has an insurmountable lead... HP tried and failed. RIM tried and failed. Amazon has barely made a dent. Microsoft will struggle to make headway as well.

Tablets are useless, IMO. Never getting one.

Looks pretty cool. But looks can be deceiving, and it all comes to down to functionality and eco-system created around them. And hey...at least it has a USB port.

I'm with woodenhead on this one.

I have a smart phone that does all kinds of crap, and quite decent desktop computers at home so I fail to see just what purpose a tablet would serve me beyond being able to brag that I have one.

For most people a laptop/desktop with a cell phone is more than enough.

A lot of people would prefer to get rid of the laptop/desktop. That's where these items come into play.

Microsoft has a chance of putting a decent dent into apples market share with this unit. It's very intelligently designed, with a lot of the add-ons included at time of purchase that apple makes you buy separately.

I could never waste time on a tablet, but I don't use my computer for just facebook/email/browsing. I can see where they have their usefulness.

I guess you guys did not watch the keynote presentation that Microsoft Put out. Ill find it for you...ah yes here is it..

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jozTK-MqEXQ

Anyways TOTALLY Different to the Ipad and that's what makes this so great. After this is out (and after maybe the 3rd revision because again its Microsoft and they seem not to get things right the first time) it will make the Ipad feel like a toy with their "apps". While yes Microsoft is getting into their Microsoft Store where they will also be doing apps but this will be more for productivity. Its a windows 8 system the same as a normal computer would have and integrate it with your home PC or Laptop.

There is so much going for this that i really think that its going to give the Ipad a run for its money for sure and Im looking forward on it as well. Also I think that Microsoft doing this right now Android may have missed the boat or they have 6 months to ramp up their structure because this is definitely a major thing in the Tablet...and I would even say Computer industry.
**Disclaimer: The above statement is in my OPINION only.

This is the "tablet" I've been waiting for. I'm glad MS got their stuff together and actually designed some hardware for themselves. The reason this is the tablet I'd want, is because it's NOT a tablet (The Windows 8 Pro one) it's a full PC that can run Photoshop and the like...real apps. External display, USB, it IS a PC in a wicked package.

I've always wanted to get a tablet, but the thing that's been holding me back is the fact that I also want to use "real" apps like PS and Visual Studio, not to mention external displays and a (somewhat) real keyboard. I won't be able to rush out and get one, but when the time comes to ditch the laptop, this will be on top of the picks for me.

It will be interesting to see what the price point and performance of the keyboard is like on the Windows 8 version. If it's high-end iPad pricing, could be killer. If it's Macbook Air pricing, it'll be killed.

I love my iPhone. I love my iPad. Im posting this from my iPhone while lounging on the couch and every once in a while shift a glance at my desktop. I rarely use it. The phone and pad do just about everything I need but ya, there's always been a few things I cant do and the most import is OS updates. To have a fully functional computer "tablet size" would be the cats meow man.
Just a bluetooth printer and I'd be set... Yep, the wave of the future.

Anyone else notice the RT Surface stopped responding near the beginning of the RT presentation? The presenter had to swap it for a backup that was conveniently close by.

Nice tablet though.
