Weapons of the future (and present)

Post by Captain Awesome »

How awesome is that?

A functioning naval railgun - soon (relatively) to be installed on battleships.

Rail gun one is interesting. Odd shaped projectiles. I would assume they'd want something more aerodynamic?
So I love the Okanagan but it's a place best enjoyed from atop a very large pile of $100 bills. - Spocky

You can see the projectile wobbling as it flies. I think the tests are only preliminary and refining the technology will come later.

But looks pretty freaking cool. Not as cool as in Eraser the movie though.

I call shenanigans on the railgun I don't see why there would be a combustive explosion involved in firing a railgun. I have no doubt that they fired a large aluminum projectile but it looks more like it was done from a cannon than an actual electromagnetic source.

http://www.popsci.com/military-aviation ... le-railgun

I actually asked the same question, and found an explanation that does make sense:

One big question this video begs is, what causes the giant fireball? Rail guns are supposed to be powered solely by electricity, and don't use explosives of any kind for propellant. Babb told PopSci the answer: The flames are from pieces of the projectile disintegrating; the 7-pound slug is jammed so firmly between the rails that when it’s fired, pieces shear off and ignite in the air.

The world speed record for legged robots was set by Cheetah robot.

Of course, it is being developed for the US military.

A lot of advancements that helped humanity were first developed for/during war. But yeah, this topic isn't meant for debate.

RE: railgun projectile shape: It's because at this point they're more concerned with developing the actual acceleration/launch mechanisms etc. at this point, than the aim/flight.
