So...did anyone else get hacked by the ransomware scam this morning?
It got my computer and two friends that I know of so far.
Castanet states there were 15 reported attacks in Kelowna, but have to think it was a lot more than that since the number they give you to call and report it is in Ontario and thus closed for the day already.

Hope nobody actually fell for it and sent them the $100

I hope no one sent any money, I would hope people think its odd that the Government of Canada thinks they should pay their fine in euros?

With all the News about these types of scams, no one should send any money1

It's too bad that some always get sucked in or these scammers would give up and go away.

You would be surprised. I'm curious about this ukash though, it claims to be available through ATMs and kiosks? Is this a legit company being used by the scammers, or is it more BS? My bet is on the latter.

Some people are naive....but the damn thing really does lock your entire system.
I suppose they're counting on some guy who watches porn being desperate enough to quickly toss out the money rather than have his wife catch him.

No idea how they're getting in to people's systems though....my computer was fine this morning - Castanet is my home page, didn't open any stories, never click on any pop ups or ads. Checked my e-mail, didn't open anything...emptied the junk folder without looking at any of them. Never did any web searches, didn't look through any sites. Nadda.
Went out for a few hours, came home and the computer is locked.
A friend's work computer was locked up when she came in this morning.

Had to shut down the system, restart in safe mode and restore everything ....then did two scans with two seperate programs and nothing was found ?

Then how did you know it was ransomeware? There should have been something on your screen asking for money to unlock it.

Had that screen show up on one computer at work this morning, locked, tried restarting in safe mode , wouldn't work. What other options are there ? ( Our screen said $100 no mention of euros )

My computer was hit this morning too. I had opened an email from Bed Bath and Beyond when the virus popped up and the computer froze. I never click on pop up adds and get the BB&B emails monthly for the coupons - never had a problem before. I told my hubby that it is apparently a virus for stupid people - "we are the police and are monitoring your computer use - but if you send us $100 we are OK with you looking at child porn, gambling, etc." Maybe cuz I don't do those things I wasn't worried.

Ya, there was. I don't remember anything about euros either.

I got it on my laptop today. I pulled the drive and now running scan. Had it once before and Malwarebytes got rid of it.

If you were a pedophile and received that, wouldn't you just pay and hope the COPS go away!!

You should be able to scan in safe mode to get rid of it.

I've been getting junk mail in my inbox that said it was from a contact. I know who my contacts are so I just sent them to junk without opening them. Anyone who got the virus have that?

When I returned to work after the winter break, there were eight supposed parcel pick up notices for things we had ordered. I'm the one who processes everything, and I knew we'd not ordered a thing. Did anyone who was hit with this open an e-mail about a parcel delivery around Christmas or shortly after?

Parcel pick up notices from which company ?
Which company notices people by e-mail ?
How did they get your e-mail address ?
I usually get a card in my mailbox or a sticker thingy thing on my mailbox depending which company.
It has to be a scam.
