Cell phone and plans

Post by gardengirl »

We have had 2 telus phones forever. We are finished our contract and own the phones. We pay $40 for each phone for 200 local minutes, unlimited text, 10 favourite numbers, family calling. No data.

Does anyone know of any better deals out there? We have Samsung Galaxy Ace Q phones, and have never really loved them. The only nice feature is the pull out keyboard.

I can't speak to comparable options as I have a pretty inclusive plan (unlimited Canada and US calling and texting and 5gb of data). However, Virgin seems to have good options for Bring You Own Phone plans at that price point.

For example, for $35/month
200 minutes
Unlimited evenings and weekends (5pm-7am)
Unlimited worldwide texting from Canada
Voicemail & call display
100MB of data

$40/month gets 300 minutes and 300mb of data.

It really depends on your usage. You can get a decent phone like a Moto G for $150 no contract and pay as little as $10 a month and up...add on $10 for 2500 text messages and 15 cents a minute for calls! you can surf the internet easily with wifi services like shaw if you are a shaw subscriber for free etc. I get your dilemma, been there. I didn't make enough calls, text, etc. to warrant the $90 a month charge that was killing me on a contract, so I bought a phone for my wife($1000 iphone lol) and a cheap one for myself, but at least there are no contracts and we decide what we pay! It's obviously different if you use your phone 24-7, business, data, overseas calls etc.

I know one thing, if you are seeking to opt out of having a $70/mo plan, then avoid the HTC lower-end phones. If you are seriously allergic to a contract of even $45, ask around and buy someone's used high-end phone; the cheap ones are a pain in the butt and not worth the hassle.

Best Buy has a Telus prepaid Moto G on for $99. You can buy an unlock code on ebay for about $3, and then use the phone on any carrier.

Take a look at the prepaid plans at virginmobile.

I have Samsung Galaxy S4 through Virgin. I went through Costco. The phone was free on 2 year contract and I received a car charger and $100 Costco gift card. My plan is $55 per month for 1000 anytime minutes, unlimited evenings and weekends, caller ID, voice mail and 1GB of data. I stream music in my truck fairly often and another GB is $10 which is still cheaper than their plan with 2GB.
