Breakthrough - 3D XPoint Non-Volatile Storage

Post by Jlabute »

A breakthrough in storage by Intel and Micron.
3D Xpoint is a new class of memory non-volatile storage.

10x denser than FLASH, 1000xfaster, 1000x higher reliability, without using transistors. (perhaps phase change memory)

This could eventually replace the old flash style solid state drives.

Yup. It's certainly going to change things.

Spoke to an Intel rep a couple of months ago about this. His prediction is that this technology is going to change how you purchase computers. The storage is so fast, it can be used as a type of RAM/Cache. Much like CPUs that have Level1 and Level2 cache, you're going to end up buying PCs with L1 traditional RAM and L2 Xpoint Ram.

That and because it's non-volatile you will see much more use on "hibernate" features and very fast "wakeup" times.

Neat!

Absolutely neat-o. lol.
Makes more sense to get the XPoint closer to the processor, since SATA is a bottleneck. I see in the near future that you may not have a typical SSD or HD but perhaps a DIMM with XPoint technology. You're right, hibernate and sleep modes will benefit. Since XPoint has no transistors it'll take less power than typical NV storage too. Every tiny bit helps.
I can hardly wait.

What struck me were the reps who mentioned there's been no real new class or memory like this for decades. DRAM, FLASH etc has all been around for donkey years.

IBM TLC PCM looks even better, actually.

Yup, IBMs breakthrough looks better... but time to commercialization? A number of companies have had breakthroughs but no product. Intel is about to bring it to market and had demo'd a DIMM with PCM. More than two levels per cell would be much better though... go for it IBM.

Yeah, very good point.

It always takes a while before any of these advancements make it to consumer-grade products, too. Enterprise always comes first, normally by a factor of years.

There's always the next best thing looming on the horizon.

Message forums for PC builders are constantly full of this. Buy my new PC now or wait for xxxx.

People who've been doing it long enough understand that there's always something new/better coming and to base your decision on when to upgrade on how your current PC is performing, not what the performance of the new PC will be.

SATA is already a bottleneck with existing SSD's such as many M.2 drives. Storage and disk controllers that plug directly into the PCIE buss are already fairly common.
