Hi all,

NoOne has moved to a nice little place in the woods near Hope. This thread is for him if he so desires to post updates on his adventures. Also for those interested in this lifestyle to ask him questions.

**edit to add** - this was written at 1am and i fell sleep while typing.

just got back to the hotel to find a new thread on castanet. noone knows how thrilled i am.

the road is great until the last 1/2 mile or so, then it's 4 wheel drive time.

i do miss the internet connection. i am out of the woods right now (call of money out weighs the call of the wild.) left the wife with the sister and brother in law. when the discussion turned to decorating i remembered a job i had to do and packed my photo gear and headed to the airport. did get to try out my chainsaw while i was up there. back home on monday.

all is well so far. seems to be fewer bugs then i remember. have a list of relatives wanting to come up so must get back.

thanks for the interest, will try to update or answer any questions when and if i can.

I have questions .........

1. How deep in the woods are you?
2. How close is your nearest neighbour?
3. Do you have on-the-grid electricity?
4. Do you run a genset for power?
5. Do you have running water?
6. Do you have an outhouse?
7. How do you keep your food cold?
8. Where does your water come from?
9. How big is your cabin?
10. Will you please post a pic of your cabin?
11. How many rooms does it have?
12. Do you have school-age children?
13. How do they get to school?

I lived off-the-grid for 8 years. It was an experience, for sure.

1. How deep in the woods are you?

deep enough we don't see any lights around but not so deep we can't run around nude all day.

2. How close is your nearest neighbour?

i would say about 5 or 6 miles according to a crow i talked to.

3. Do you have on-the-grid electricity?

no.

4. Do you run a genset for power?

yes as backup, solar panels charging for most needs.

5. Do you have running water?

yes, we wouldn't have moved without it. instant on hot water - propane

6. Do you have an outhouse?

yes, but we use the flush toilet inside. septic tank/field.

7. How do you keep your food cold?

propane refridgerator. quite nice as it also take the chill out of the air on cool mornings.

8. Where does your water come from?

artesian well.

9. How big is your cabin?

around 850 square feet.

10. Will you please post a pic of your cabin?

later, possibly, we did moved up here for our privacy. have to discuss it more with the wife. she nixed the idea of a reality tv show already.

11. How many rooms does it have?

2 bdrms, one big kitchen-dining-livingroom, bathroom, pantry and services rooms, mud room.

12. Do you have school-age children?

no, we don't. we thought it best to not have kids as we are really kids inside ourselves. i'm sure we would have made terrible parents.

13. How do they get to school?

see above.

I lived off-the-grid for 8 years. It was an experience, for sure.

i've done it before up north. priorities are very different than city life. makes you feel satisfied knowing all around you is under your control, some what. by the of august our heating bill for next winter will be paid. six cords of fire wood cut and stacked. all dead wood, we don't like cutting down a living tree when there is so much laying around for the taking.

well, check out is 11am and gotta go. will be in town a week or so from now so till then, noone signing off.

Imglad that you like your own thread. I thought that you might, also I'm kinda excited for your bravery and interested in doing something like this one day.

1 - Did you build the cabin yourself?

2 - what is the plan for getting in and out in the winter?

3 - What age group are you and your wife?

1. Are you like part of some cult?
2. Do you have long stringy hair wrapped in a tie-died bandana?
3. Do you conduct naked tree worshipping ceremonies at 3 a.m.?
4. Do you want regular updates on the state of the socioeconomic impacts of wombat poop on destitute aboriginal street people in Papua New Guinea?

the original cabin has been here for a hundred years or so though by modern standards it would be called a shed,it is one now - plan to convert it into a sauna. the family built the one we're in back in the forties and my wife and i, with help of relatives have reno'd it up to modern standards.

2 - what is the plan for getting in and out in the winter?

plan on buying a snowmobile in the late summer or fall. that should do to get to and from the truck about a couple miles away.

3 - What age group are you and your wife?

we're in our early forties. we are very responsible teenagers at heart.

at minimum we're up here till next year, maybe longer. we share it with family coming up during the summer. if work calls me away too much we may sell them our share as we paid for all the work done to it. always looking at a place of our own. some what sadly it probably won't be in canada.

I would love to see some pics, if not of your place then of the surrounding plants/wildlife. I'm sure you've seen some really neat birds!

Do you have a bird feeder?

Do you have many bears in the area? My in-laws up near Beaverdell have seen bears, but more recently moose and cougar. Deer of course, and the dogs are hunting the packrats (which have eaten all mom's tomatoes, poor mom!).

Hope area has a lot more rainfall so I bet it is quite lush compared to this area. We are really glad you are taking the time to "visit" with us :)
I haven't failed until I quit.
