Re: You've just gotta get in the last word, don't you?
So I will interupt this silly thread to tell you a story:
Sitting on the beach in Mexico drinking a margarita, we had a lovely conversation with a young girl (26yo) from France, she spoke English flawlessly with almost no discernable French accent.
The next day at a different spot on the same beach we spent the afternoon near a family from Quebec. Grandparents, parents and kids, the male parent, possibly the same age as our young lady friend from the day before. Purely by co-incidence I wound up walking into town beside the young man, I asked him where he was from, he said Quebec, and in a very thick accent told me that he did not speak much English. He asked me where I was from, so I lied and told him from France, he asked if I spoke French, I said no, not many of us speak French in France, that most of us spoke only English. He believed me and looked a little chagrinned.

The truth is that North American usually don't make the effort to learn more than their native tongue and in europe that are required to learn more than one language and they start early. My family in Finland speak several different languages fluently.

Exactly. Not a whole lot of Canadians can speak the two official languages of their own country.
