Gratuities in Kelowna - Can anyone explain?
Hi Everyone!
I've enjoyed a career as a server for quite awhile now. I take alot of pride in my job and genuinely do my best to accommodate for all of my customers' needs. I moved to Kelowna recently (from Ontario) and I've noticed that people here seem to be harder to impress.
I'm asking after reading some of the comments on a recent CTV news article: http://bc.ctvnews.ca/tipping-on-bad-ser ... l-1.932398
Obviously, I understand that things don't always go well, and a tip should suffer accordingly. But, does anyone have a reasonable explanation for the lower overall gratuities in Kelowna?
PS - Please don't be offended. I'm not being critical, just curious.
Thanks, Lola.

I'm guessing several factors:
Not a high income region compared to something like Alberta.
Eating out is really expensive, it's shockingly expensive. Add tips on top of that and consumers have to choose to tip or not go out at all.
Kelowna is a retirement town. 50 cents isn't a good tip

to be honest, I've found most customer service in restaurants here to be very bad. I always said someone could make a killing in this town if they offered good levels of it on a consistent basis.
I tip what i feel is fair to the service, bad service no tip, moderate service 1-10%, good service 15%, excellent 20%
but that is my system.
At the same time I understand that some servers work and live on tips, but you got to remember it isn't mandatory.

I tip on hotness. If the server isn't afraid to show some cleavage than I'm willing to tip!

I think it just boils down to demographics. The older generation is a lot tighter with their money and they're not interested in enjoying some social time - They want their dinner in 5 minutes or less, if not they perceive as poor service! I get very embarrassed when eating out with my parents when it comes to tips! No mom, a loonie, 2 dimes and a nickel is not enough to leave for the server for a $75 meal! ROTFL

Older people are tighter with their money because they are probably thinking how long they had to work to make that $75 dollars plus tip. My dad might have worked three days to make that much money. At any rate, why is your mom paying anything for her meal or a tip, you should be footing the bill for her.

This is Kelowna. Everyone is cheap.
Mostly that is because everyone is broke.
Except for the ones that aren't. They are just cheap.
