Anyone got extra fireplace ash?
Does anyone have a surplus of fireplace ash? My pellet stove hardly produces any and I like to use it in my chicken coops for all sorts of reasons.
I would pick up and bring my own bucket.

I can't. I use all mine to make lye water for soap and lutefisk.
Somebody here should have some spare tho. Lotsa woodstoves out there.

I prefer the more subtle sledgehammer-in-the-back-of-the-head taste of surstromming over lutefisk.
That way I can just use salt and have the ash for better uses.

You know what works really well in the bottom of your hen house? Wood pellets. They absorb really well and they can pe transferred to the garden for fertilizer. they do break down well once exposed to the rain and sun.
Computers allow people to make more mistakes in less time than anything since the invention of tequila and automatic weapons.

I always worry about the chickens trying to eat them. The ash I use to keep down mites and the lye helps the feces break down faster. I use a deep litter system in my coops so it's sort of self composting.
400+ views and no one has a bucket of ash? COME ON, PEOPLE!!!!
There's a dozen eggs in it for whoever can find me some ash....WAY better than lutefisk.

I wish you would have posted earlier, I just threw out a 2 gallon bucket.
How often do you need it?
I can save some from now on, and let you know.

Thanks so much for the offer, but sadly I'm at least a 45 minute drive from Glenrosa and don't anticipate being over there any time soon.

I would take it whenever you have it, if you happen to remember me next time you clean your fireplace. My pellet stove will burn full tilt for weeks and not produce more than an ice cream pail's worth. Thanks, appreciate it. I'll make sure you get a colorful dozen of fresh eggs for your trouble!

My parents used wood store ashes for number of things:
repels snails & slugs in the garden
ice melt
combination of ashes & tomato juice to get skunk smell out of our dogs fur
helps with tomato plants
