So what politicians *DO* you like?

We never hesitate to criticize politicans from all over the world in these boards. So what politicians -- past or present -- have you actually admired and respected? I'm going to keep mine Canadian, but by all means, give us any respected politicians from anywhere -- they are a rare breed.

(Please try to offer your examples, rather than just 'shooting down' the choices of others.)

The Canadian Prime Ministers I have positive memories of include:

Mike Pearson ( introduced universal health care, student loans, the Canada Pension Plan, the Order of Canada, the Canadian flag, and he kept Canada out of the Vietnam War. He eventually won the Nobel Peace Prize)
Joe Clark (begruding respect -- while a bit of an awkward goof, was a 'giant killer' and basically, an honest guy...)
Jean Creatien (Canada prospered under his watch... kept us out of Bush's Iraq war... liked his 'Shawinigan Handshake')

And provincially ...

WAC Bennett (built BC into a world player in post WW2 Canada...)
Dave Barrett (started some important programs, ALR, ICBC ...)
Bill Bennett (the province flourished under his watch)
Mike Harcourt (begruding respect -- "took the bullet" for an NDP scandal for which he was uninvolved and had no knowledge)

Others

Tommy Douglas (introduced the continent's first universal health care program...)
Stanley Knowles (one of Canada's most knowledgeable parliamentarians... while serving as MP, refused all financial perks available in the public trough..)
