So an Asian version of a chalk line tool.

YES, exactly. They use ink instead of chalk, producing a very thin and exact straight line. I does not work well over long distance or outside where there may be a wind/breeze.

I would think that about 12 ft. would be the max. useful length.

I love Japanese woodworking. I couldn't do it, but I sure do appreciate it.

It's never a wasted day if you learn something new. Thanks for posting this.

I couldn't help but notice what he is making. It appears to be those wooden strips on which prayers are painted that decorate Japanese gravesites.
