The otter may be natural to BC but isn't natural to man-made ponds nor is koi part of their natural diet. Opportunistic little bugger isn't he. Same can be said of many wildlife finding themselves in the city - natural to BC doesn't mean welcome.

Otter is winning ... Koi clearout underway as voracious Chinatown otter proves elusive.

Staff at the Dr. Sun Yat-Sen gardens haven't seen the ravenous river otter that's been chewing its way through a stock of valuable koi fish this weekend, but they know it's there.

The hungry critter has eaten three more of the fish, bringing the total to 10, and on Sunday, staff said they were desperately trying to rescue the rest.

"It's very frustrating. We actually went into the water [Saturday] trying to save our koi. It was very difficult because at the bottom of the pond there's a bed of clay and it's hard to see," said garden spokesperson Debbie Cheung said.

"We managed to save one, and we asked the Vancouver Aquarium to take care of that one koi."

Here's idea once the otter has wiped out the koi's down there, should bring the little guy up here & deposit in Kasugai Gardens & wipe out that koi population.

Sad that so many people that enjoyed the koi won't get to any more :(

I think those that got swept up into the two teams didn't realize the scope of what they are cheering for. Death for one and life for the other. I'd rather both species lived.

Or dump him at the mouth of Brandt's creek - we have a surprising amount of koi that have been dumped in the lake and thrive there. I actually saw them IN Brandt's creek this summer (they get big, a foot and a half or so!). In the summer if you go out to Rotary Marsh, walk part way out the point around late afternoon you can often see the water boil as the huge school of them feeds on bugs.

Team otter. Because then I can sell them some of my koi to replace them once that otter gets trapped and skinned and turned into a fur hat for Queen K.

In otter news, they are having problems up in the Vanderhoof area where a massive increase in otter populations has led to otters now eating the ancient endangered sturgeon out of the Nechako river. They might drive the giant fish to extinction, but that's okay because otters are cute.

The river otter, however, remains at large, but it has not been seen in the garden in three days.
The last two koi, along with 344 juveniles, have now been transferred to the Vancouver Aquarium for safekeeping.

At least there are offspring to replenish the pond and the otter remains free.
