A tranquil garden in Vancouver where a crafty otter has devoured about 10 expensive koi is set to reopen this morning.

Dr. Sun-Yat Sen Classical Chinese Garden closed last Friday after the river otter moved into a pond and began feasting on the carp.

The city's park board says garden staff lowered the water level on Tuesday and removed the two remaining adult koi and 344 juveniles.

The fish were transferred to Vancouver Aquarium for safekeeping, joining a third adult koi that was removed Saturday.

The park board says the otter first moved into the garden on Nov. 17 but has not been seen in a few days.

It says staff will refill the pond with water and modify the garden's entrance and exits to deter future otter visits.

And the clever little beggers eat around the transmiters, and it sounds like the transmitters are attracting the otters.

"The sturgeon travel the length and breadth of the Nechako watershed, swimming as far north as Takla Lake and as far west as Stuart Lake, but always returning to a stretch of water downtown Vanderhoof to spawn."

*AHEM* Takla Lake is west of Stuart Lake (Takla Landing is on Takla Lake)...

I have been under the impression that sturgeon lived under bridges and in deep water. Had no idea they were that far north.

Just learned something new today....thanks Glacier

Fed-up otter makes getaway in Vancouver

VANCOUVER - An otter that dined on prized fish at a classical Chinese garden in downtown Vancouver seems to have dashed as the facility takes steps to ensure the unwelcome critter doesn't come back.

Howard Normann, director of park operations for the city, said automatic closers will be installed on two gates and plates attached to the bottom of them so the river otter can't return to Dr. Sun-Yat Sen Classical Chinese Garden.

Two surveillance cameras will also be placed around a pond that was home to the garden's collection of decorative koi, Normann told a news conference at the garden Thursday, when the facility reopened to the public after closing on Nov. 20.

“It’s very emotional, the koi, they are very important as decorative elements in the garden but going beyond, being beautiful, they do have values and significance from a cultural perspective, especially in Chinese culture,” he said.

“I’d like to see that through this process, it brings greater awareness about animals, preservation and also the cultural meanings behind elements like the koi, which is something that can be positive out of this event.”

Or trap it when it returns and have it stuffed. (I'm dead against that)

I'm all for stuffing a Koi, like a fish on one of those wall plates.

And put the life sized otter sculpture with it and make a real scene out of them.
