The same could be said for all religion. People turn to God or what they believe he might be in times of trouble and vulnerability and end up in a church. It's more noticable with fringe groups because they actively seek new members so we see them "recruiting" for lack of a better term.

2000 years ago, Christianity was doing what these "fringe" groups are now. They were out recruiting members, creating holidays to make Christianity more appealing, etc. Is it any different because they did it first?

Not at all, I only listed "fringe" groups because I have seen people join certain congregations with out hitting bottom so to speak.
