Canada’s oldest mosque opens its doors to Edmonton’s homeless as bitter cold continues

By Nadine Yousif StarMetro Edmonton

EDMONTON—A mosque in north Edmonton will be opening its doors overnight for shelter as a deep freeze continues to grip much of the city.

Al Rashid Mosque, Canada’s oldest mosque, made the announcement Wednesday afternoon that it will open its doors to the public between 6 p.m. and 10 a.m., as temperatures are expected to reach a chilling low of -43 C overnight.

<snip>

In the meantime, Al-Henedy said the mosque will be appointing volunteers who will stay overnight with any visitors, and is urging Edmontonians to direct those who need help to the mosque, or to call 211, a crisis line set up to help the city’s homeless. Al Rashid’s efforts to open its doors are done in collaboration with the Alberta Muslim Affairs Public Council.

This is not the first time the mosque has opened its doors to help. It opened up during the Fort McMurray fires in the summer of 2016 for families fleeing the blaze.

“Helping out during rough times, that’s definitely something we have done before,” Al-Henedy said.

The next thing you know Saudi Arabia will start accepting Syrian refugees.

Sorry to dispell another myth but.....

With Saudi Arabia’s non-signatory status, the Syrians residing in Saudi Arabia are classified as “Arab brothers and sisters in distress” instead of refugees covered by UN treaties. According to Nabil Othman, the UNHCR regional representative to the Gulf region, there were 500,000 Syrian refugees in Saudi Arabia at the time of his statement. The government itself of Saudi Arabia has stated that it has, over the past five years since the start of the conflict hosted 2.5 million refugees.

Hi Green Barbarian,

Sounds like you might need your piano tuned.

Everyone deserves safety and peace in times like this.

Well here is the religion of peace in all it's glory.

https://www.castanet.net/news/World/253 ... x-adultery

New Islamic criminal laws that took effect in Brunei on Wednesday, punishing gay sex and adultery by stoning offenders to death, have triggered an outcry from countries, rights groups and celebrities far beyond the tiny Southeast Asian nation's shores.

But under the new laws — which apply to children and foreigners, even if they are not Muslim — those found guilty of gay sex can be stoned to death or whipped. Adulterers risk death by stoning too, while thieves face amputation of a right hand on their first offence and a left foot on their second.

From wiki

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brunei

officially the Nation of Brunei, the Abode of Peace

I guess Adobe of Peace is not meant for the LGBTQ community.
Why use a big word when a diminutive one will suffice.
