amazing quality glass plate with a depiction of jesus without long hair or beard discovered in spain and it is early, over 1600 years old, so from the roman era. truly stunning.

I don't think it's so unusual that images of Christ were made in the image of the artists head. Because of course a beaded or unbearded Jesus isn't as compelling as the fact that (if you believe in the historical Jesus) would have been a brown guy with black wirey hair.
My favourite comedy episode of all time was on the show Good Times where JJ painted a portrait of Black Jesus.
