Lest the world forgets the original 9-11 massacre

Post by janalta »

While the world remembers those lives lost in the tragic events of 9-11 in NY, there are families still grieving over the slaughter of 120 men, women and children on September 11, 1857.
A little known, seldom taught massacre - the largest and most disturbing murder plot in North American history...the Mountain Meadows Massacre.
On the evening of Sept 11, a wagon train of settlers travelling through Utah on their way to California, were systematically and sadistically murdered in cold blood by members of the LDS church...which was headed, at that time, by Brigham Young.

All in the name of religion.

That's like saying that the abduction yesterday proves that Alberta is pure evil. It doesn't prove anything other than some people are quite bigoted toward religion.

Do LDS have higher crime rates or lower crime rates than the general population?

Horrible analogy.

Not sure on the LDS crime stats.

The point being made is religion creates more evil than good.

Actually, the majority of criminals are, in fact, religious.
Utah has the highest percent of people with depression though...but that's another topic.

Yes indeed, some people are very much against religion...but that's got nothing to do with the article posted.

That's a horribly evil claim to make. That's like making the claim that atheism creates more evil than good because of the actions of the Kims or Pol Pot. To be sure, this was a dark day for the LDS. From the article, "For today’s Latter-day Saints, Mountain Meadows is the most troubling event in their religion’s complicated history." The natives were also involved, but it doesn't say if they were also Mormons.

The event should not be forgotten, but to point to a single event and make generalizing claims is just dishonest.

Hell no would I let my daughter go to Bountiful. Muslims blowing up stuff does not implicate all of them. But here's the difference, Islam has been responsible for thousands of terror attacks since the "Mormon 9/11." Mormons have been responsible for what since then? zero? Maybe a few that I don't know about. If Mormons were killing people today and asking the Constitution be replaced with Mormon Law, hell ya I'd be expressing concern. But that's not happening. The OP is implying that Mormons are as big a threat as Islam, which is laughable. You say that I am showing a double standard with respect to Christianity versus Islam, but it is you and the others in the thread that are showing a double standard. As Sam Harris says, "you still get agitated over the the abortion bombing from 1986, but say very little about 100s of Jihad attacks every year."

Muslims are people, and they aren't a threat. Islam is a totalitarian ideology like Fascism and Communism, and that's where the threat lies.

. As Sam Harris says, "you still get agitated over the the abortion bombing from 1986, but say very little about 100s of Jihad attacks every year."

and that's where mr harris and his thinking fails .

if we do not learn from mistakes of the past , we are doomed to fail again . the believing in invisible beings that somehow should tell humans what to do and how to act and react , have lead to death over and over again . we know exactly why isil came to be. we know exactly why bin laden attacked his former bosses . we know through the ages christians have slaughtered as many as any other mystical god fearing group has .

as far as harris trying to defect blame on folks who are trying to explain how to get out of the mess by explaining how it happened in the first place is at best dumb and worst cowardly.

just think , if all fake god worshiping went the way of the dodo bird, humans would have to have real reasons for not liking someone , other than made up rules or sayings to base killing someone on .

This story is only one of the thousands where innocent people have been murdered in the name of the religion.

Stereotyping is fun, I agree, but making a broad statement about 5 billion people because of one event by some Mormons 158 years ago should get first prize in the "who can make the most sweeping generalization" contest.

Yes, but very few who follow Islam are a threat. Try not to generalize.
