Internet helping to kill religion

A recent study published in the Journal for the Scientific Study of Religion has found evidence that the more we use the internet, the less likely we are to have a specific religious affiliation or to believe in and practice one religion exclusively.

Paul McClure, a doctoral student in sociology at Texas’ Baylor University, decided to take a broad look at how the internet has influenced our religious proclivities. He was inspired, in part, by previous research that suggested the rise of the internet since the 1990s has contributed to an increase of people becoming religiously unaffiliated (a group otherwise known as “Nones,” which includes, but isn’t limited to, atheists and agnostics). He analyzed data from an ongoing project that’s been managed by his university since 2005, the Baylor Religion Survey. He specifically relied on the 2010 version of the nationally representative survey, conducted by the Gallup Organization, which was the first to feature questions about people’s use of the internet as well as how they felt about religion.

He found that a person’s greater internet use, even after accounting for factors like age, education, and political affiliation, was correlated with a higher likelihood they would endorse statements like, “All of the religions in the world are equally true,” and “All around the world, no matter what religion they call themselves, people worship the same God.” Being younger, identifying as a Democrat, and living in a larger city was also associated with being less religiously exclusive.

This makes sense as knowledge is the single greatest god killer in history, and the internet has provided the human race with an unprecedented level of access to knowledge. People now have the ability to research for themselves and review scientific literature instead of simply asking their parents who might say “because God”

I have no real problem with religion.
Really it's just a round about way or guide to keep people inline and act civil-some people really need that especially when their isn't any quality parenting.
Though it's disturbing to see educated adults in 1st world countries let religion ideology guide them over scientific fact.... those debates are like arguing with an 5 yr old on what Santas reindeer should be fed to decrease methane production.

The internet can and will . Likely is used now . To spread all sorts of religion. Good and bad. Extreme and moderate.

If you think religion is a bad thing. You must hate hospitals .
As quite a few were built and run by churches.
KGH was built by KLO company . Not the church but not the state either.

Too many people need the guidance . We need to re embrace religion. Look how bad its gotten in just a few years of the godless trudeau liberals. We have needles everywhere. Its a top down problem . So i say people should reconnect with the past. Get back to church.

I personally want to join a church. I just am lost as to where i belong
Now they want to take our guns away . That would be just fine. Take em away from the criminals first . Ill gladly give u mine. "Charlie Daniels"

You have got to stand for something . Or you will fall for anything "Aaron Tippin"

Hospitals have existed independently of religion for millennia. Disliking religion does not mean you would hate hospitals.

I’m not sure why we need to “re-embrace” religion. People are capable of morality and good without being tied to dogmatic beliefs that lead to harm.

I also have no idea what you’re talking about “how bad it’s gotten” under Trudeau. First of all the man is a catholic, not “god-less” and second. How bad what has gotten? Canada has lowest unemployment in 40 years. Excellent job growth, international prestige and recognition (in fact our brand is number 2 worldwide) and a growing economy. We’ve also acknowledged women as equals, despite what many religious folk have preached for centuries otherwise.

Its pretty interesting to go on pew research (would have used canada census but we have a gap of info after 2001) and look at the religion / spirituality distribution by age. I think this one gives the best impression of the age trends;

Do you think AIDS is a bad thing? You must hate religion.
The Pope spoke out against condom use back in... 2005? somewhere around that time.

in my eyes, my statement is as foolish as yours.

So we need to make sure that the Muslim extremists and TV Evangelists all have internet access...

We can only pray for the results.

You do know that Greeks had hospitals before Christians right?, why should anyone embrace religion, there is no evidence of any gods besides the bold empty claims of believers, pastors and the Bible. What evidence do you have that your imaginary sky fairy exists?

I'm, in now way, defending believers, but it's called faith for a reason. They don't rely on evidence, proof or fact to suport their beliefs. They need only faith. It wouldn't be faith anymore if it would be explained scientifically.

The sad disconnect is that those of us without faith just can't understand how comforting or satisfying it must be to have a god. (or imaginary sky fairy friend).

People who are actually religious wouldn't be wasting hours and hours on Castanet debating the question of whether or not the internet is helping kill religion, so it's hard to say if any correlation is linked to causation -- although, I am inclined to believe that being exposed to different ideas without censorship does tend to move society toward truth. That's why trying to ban books and music as the religious did 30 years ago or ban Jordan Peterson and Lindsay Shepherd as the modern moral police try to do are a sign of the hating truth. No bans on any ideas whatsoever is the quickest way to killing bad ideas (although the process is never quick, complete, or total). "There's a sucker born every minute."

As for the death of religion, according to the data, it's the religiously unaffiliated who are going to be in decline in the coming decades, but I say that as one who doesn't put much faith in those who predict the future. People have been predicting the extinction of the Catholic church for 150 years, and yet these predictions end up being almost as inaccurate as the ones predicting Jesus coming back.

Perhaps you could share a link to that data, because everything I've read about Canada indicates religion in on a down slide.

My understanding of those stats are that they mostly represent countries like india where they have a huge population and a large growth rate as well as a large portion of their population being religious. So worldwide by percentage non theistic people will be "declining" though generally in western developed nations theism is on the decline.

I believe that the internet is providing information about different religions on a global scale. There has never been a time in the past history of this planet that has provided such an opportunity to learn as much and as fast, than we can today.
the opportunities to gain knowledge of others are limitless.
People , regardless of where they are on this planet can read and learn something new about others that they never had access to before.
The entire planet, (that has internet) can now read and learn things that their parents could not. therefore they have an open book placed right before them, and they can decide what is right for them, based upon their personal feelings.
They no longer have to be forced to believe the same things that their parents believed and were taught by their parents.

The internet is a tool that should be used to bring ALL of us closer together. The internet is the window of enlightenment to all religions and a pathway to understanding other peoples.
