Earth hour is so 2004.

Now it's all about vegan tap water.

I see our good mayor is a staunch supporter of this folly ...

Gray urges residents to join Earth Hour
by Grant Scott - Story: 73223
Mar 31, 2012 / 9:30 am

Mayor Walter Gray issued a friendly challenge to the residents of Kelowna earlier this week to help raise awareness for the World Wildlife Fund’s Earth Hour event, taking place Saturday, March 31.

“The Earth Hour event is a practical and symbolic show of support for the future of our planet,” says Gray.

“The City of Kelowna has taken the FortisBC Earth Hour pledge, and has committed to turning off the lights at City Hall and Stuart Park, except safety lights and those that are hard-wired, for the event.”

The pledge encouraged residents to pledge to participate, and get a chance to win a weekend at the Manteo Resort and dinner at the Wild Apple Grill.

The community with the most pledges per capita will win the Earth Hour Challenge Community Challenge and a non-profit in that community will receive a $5,000 energy savings upgrade to their facility, courtesy of the FortisBC PowerSense program.

Earth Hour is a global event highlighting the importance of conserving energy and working together to tackle climate change. It started in 2007 in Sydney, Australia with 2.2 million homes and businesses turning their lights off for one hour. It has grown into a global symbolic climate change initiative.

BC Hydro made a pitch on its website, urging consumers to join in and also make plans to reduce energy use year around. Last year's response shows what people can do, the utility said on its website.

"British Columbians turned off the equivalent of 7.8 million 15-watt compact fluorescent light bulbs for the hour," the utility said. "If everyone in B.C. implemented the same conservation measures for just one hour every evening, the combined savings would be enough to power close to 4,000 homes for an entire year."

Hockey fans taking in Saturday night's NHL games in Vancouver and Toronto might notice the lighting is a bit dimmer than normal. The league says non-essential lighting will be turned off for an hour at all games scheduled for Saturday night and the league's New York City headquarters will also observe Earth Hour.

Last year in Canada there was some concern that fewer people may have been observing Earth Hour compared to previous years. Disappointment was expressed in Toronto when many stores stayed brightly lit and there were few public celebrations compared to previous years.

Events were taking place across the world and Australians were among the first to mark Earth Hour with Sydney's iconic Harbour Bridge and Opera House going dark Saturday night.

WWF said the number of countries and territories participating has grown from 135 last year to 147 this year.

What a pile of smelly brown stuff.

Maybe Fortis and BC Hydro should just throw the switch and git 'er done in one fell swoop - half an hour of totally awesome "outness" for all of Canada at once. We'll all just feel so huggy and warm.

Nahhhh. I'll just keep turning everything off before bed time, or when it's not being used, like I always do. < Probably doesn't count though.

I'm sure I'll feel super guilty afterwards too. :cursor:

I went to bed at 8:30 does that count? Uh oh, then I drove to Vernon at midnight and filled my car, didn't realize the carbon tax increase was only on the lower mainland so when I went into PetroCan and said, "I guess I'm too late to save from the carbon tax credit" and a customer nearly had a heart failure from the announcement of a new tax he'd never heard of, I guess I cancelled out my "Earth Hour" contribution.

Sorry guy. :eyeballspin:

Earth Hour's impact hits home
by Grant Scott - Story: 73258

The community with the highest per capita participation for this year’s Challenge is the Village of Salmo. By collecting the most pledges, per capita, Salmo earns bragging rights ...

http://www.castanet.net/edition/news-st ... .htm#73258

All 11 families in the Village participated =D>

I was pretty disappointed that Gray got involved, but on the other hand, if he said nothing and ignored this foolish event, the greenies would have been all over him about not caring for the environment. Walter can't win for losing when it comes to nonsense like this.

West Kelowna wasn't participating either - it would have been tough to participate in Hockeyville and Earth Hour at the same exact time. I do like their priorities though.

oh ok - thanks for correcting me. It would have been funny to switch to the BC feed for the Hockeyville results and just be shown a black screen because the Hockeyville people were participating.

I think Bill sums up my thoughts on this goofiness.

There's no cause for alarm in the NDP ranks. I have it on good authority that if the polls get too close, Adrian Dix will back date them to April '13.
