Uhmmm....am I looking and reading this right? You want to promote and support tourism to draw the young people to Kelowna?
lets bring the kids back to Kelowna . when i moved here in 91 there was lots for a young kid to do.

How many months of the year (12 months), do these types of "attractions" generate income for the property owners/land-holders/landlords/and all other trickle-down businesses that have to stay open for ALL 12 months?
Tourist season is MAYBE 3 months out of the year? (June/July/August). All business that enjoy a good 3 months, must be able to survive the next 9 months on what the full-time/permanent residents are will/able to spend. IF those residents are relying on 3 months of solid work and have to barely/if at all, survive on EI for the other 9 months, they won't have much in the way of disposable income to spend on their own children's desire for entertainment.
I know, it's a catch 22 situation but, there is a solution. The retired can afford it, they have the guaranteed annual income to support it, but it is "not fun" for the young. It may be stable and secure but the young don't like it.
If you need to have fun all the time, try living as a "Carnival" worker. There is no faster way of taking the fun out of something than having to rely upon it as a way of life/living.

Even they shut down for the winter around here. West Coast Amusements does their last event of the season in September in Rutland for September Days and then they go to winter quarters until the May long weekend when they start their season (again in Rutland) for Rutland May Days.

Evidently you have not been to the H2O centre lately. There is a lot of water activities to do, river run, wake board ride, slides and it is open all year. It is tough to run a business on 3 months revenue when you pay taxes year round. Besides the next generation is not having as many kids so fewer customersl
As for Regatta, don't need it when everyone under 40 has their nose stuck in their not so Smartphone.

higher insurance for willfully damaged businesses plus the increased costs of clean-up and security from all this partying by irresponsible people have created most of the demise of these events.

no its our unwillingness to pay the cost .its called collateral damage .but kelowna business does not have the guts to endure .now your whining and blowing our wad on a yuppie downtown renovation .like any one from any where else will give a rats patoutie.Hows that workin for ya? are yall gettin rich?Wakefest was my best weekend ever !

They rocked because people knew how to behave themselves in public back then.

They drank way more and partied way harder back in the day. They worked so hard they had to.You only see pictures of the day events then. They were so well organized and promoted .They had so any fun things to do back then .The reason they rocked was people really put their heart into it and unpleasantries were forgiven and swept under the rug.a man used to take his son to the pub and teach him to drink with honour. now dads up north fracking gas.were becoming big oils bedroom.

Sadly collateral damage is usually associated with a war or other physical altercation, and something to be avoided at all cost. It is a shame that the present generation of youth seem to relish the idea of such conflicts while previous ones preached peace, love and harmony.
There is no reason Kelowna business's or residents should have to endure any costs for these events. If a promoter wants to use our city and its facilities to hold an event and profit from that event then the promoter should be covering ALL the costs of that event including property damage by patrons, policing and clean up. If the costs to hold such events prohibits any profits the promoter had hoped to make then like any business it will eventually fail and cease to exist. The organizers of Wakefest chose the segment of the population they wished to target and the through previous experience with the event the City calculated the cost of policing , damage and clean up. The promoter realized that the actions of his guests/patrons was causing costs for the event to now erode his profits so he decided putting on the event was no longer profitable enough for him.
There is no reason Kelowna businesses or residents should have to endure anything so someone else can make profit from the communities pain or loss. This is true with development or events. The benefit to the community must supercede the profit and greed of an individual.

I agree completely, well said. Those of the opposing view are those who don't pay to clean up after themselves and seem to enjoy causing mayham. The riots in Vancouver have revealed that people will do anything if they think they can get away with it. Arrests are still being made over that.
I clean up garbage in N Glenmore on a regular basis. Where do these people think the garbage goes after they throw it out their window as they drive by? While a dull development may be moving forward at least people will be hired to clean up the garbage left by those who are too lazy or stupid to place it in well placed garbage cans all around our city.
The of City Kelowna has done much to eliminate gaffiti on transformer boxes and other street architecture. The cost of wrapping them with graphics does not come cheap and is paid for by taxpayers not the ones who caused the problem. The pukes who tag and vandalise the town laugh and run away, they are the gutless, spineless ones not the businesses.

The Regatta riots were in the mid-80s.

There was 2 more recent riots
1994 riot After the NHL game ended, an estimated 50,000 to 70,000 individuals converged upon Downtown Vancouver. The gathering developed into a riot at Robson and Thurlow Street, after an accident involving a man who fell from a lamp standard into the crowd below.

and then more recently
2011 riot At least 140 people were reported as injured during the incident, one critically; at least four people were stabbed, nine police officers were injured, and 101 people were arrested that night, with 16 further arrests following the event.[3][5]

Arrests were made in september:

and I heard about 50 arrests were made more recently than that.

Sadly collateral damage is usually associated with a war

we are at war with every town in bc for tourists.how is it that a whole aquatic center burning to the ground doesn't stop this town from rocking ,but a few fist fights and litter does now. Liitter! thats just sad, It has become as crusty as cv's avatar.did anyone attend the center of gravity ?will it return after those kids got beat up?I agree though kids use to make more love and not war.they use to drink less and smoke more dope.now there doing e and caffeine drinks.it doesn't even feel like a party any more just a big posing contest.

Yes! TIMES have changed. So have people and especially the younger generation. Along with previous generations' morals, so have the need to attract this type of personalities to our peaceful/senior/retirement location. If the youngens' want to party and do as THEY want/need, then let them find someplace that is willing to accommodate/tolerate their behaviors and clean-up afterwards needs.
I have raised my children and assisted with the raising of theirs. I am done with that age group, I am tired, I just want to live in peace and quiet. I have paid my dues and my taxes and I have earned what I have today. Let THAT generation do what they want in a town/city that is more willing to accept the responsibility of cleaning up the mess. I am done cleaning dirty diapers.
