Positives - I own a 1ton to haul my loot.
- Payed for wife's school
- Payed for condo on summer holidays, with a budget of 1 tank of boat gas/day
- no worries about $, early retirement, no bills, cept mortgage
Negatives - missed both the kids 1st soccer practices.
- haven't worked in the yard yet, or got the garden ready
- couldn't build the ladder my little girl asked for so she could move the clouds so she could see the sun
- will miss the boy's hip hop recital
- tonight is movie night at home
It's not easy,in fact its quite hard, but it will be worth it in the long run. Be prepared for sacrifices.
To everyone looking for the gravy fly in fly out what do you have to offer? We have tons of unskilled labour here. You need a skill, a trade or some kind of paperwork behind you. You are now competing in a world market. Everyone in Canada, the US and the world wants to work up here. What makes you special? Don't pm me as my inbox is full, get online or get out there, the doors are there you just have to walk through.
Can't deal with 21/7 shifts. Too much time away from home. Not worth the money for me. It's all about your priorities.

Talk to the career people at Horizon , Precision Drilling , Nabor's etc.. and see what they have to say about them .

Re: Alberta workers
Just thought I'd throw on my 2 cents instead of lurking in the background. I am an okanagan boy but have been in Grande Prairie for a week now. You don't have to work the patch or the rigs to earn good coin here. I am in construction and the last 10 years were really good in Kelowna but now things have really hit the wall. Up here, I can have all the work I want and don't have to do it for 20$ an hour. BC is effed on many different levels. From my perspective, the gov't is forcing out its younger people and this will no doubt have disastrous effects in the future. What happens when big business supercedes the needs of people? They say with great power comes great responsibility and today, power + $$. But what are these corporations doing in return for the people? I am saddened when I think of how our gov't has mismanaged and sold our resources for the benefit of a few. And what options are we left with? Vote forthe NDP or get out of the province. Anyway, kind of a random babble but my point is, don't be afraid of Alberta, its not paradise but at least you can make an honest living here.

The prices seem reasonable but a lot of companies will pay for your training when hired.

Re: Alberta workers
It has come time for me to leave Kelowna and move to Fort McMurray to be with my husband who is already there. Looking online and there seems to be alot of jobs that I will be able to get with my experience. I don't even have to go out in the mud and sludge to find work. My parents are here but my husband is there. I leave my support group and venture out into the great unknown. I hear people saying I'm goin to hate it and to shut down my vision of a 7 year plan saying that I will only make it 2 years. This coming from a person who has been lucky to have a nice job for 22 years. Thanks for the vote of confidence.
If one truley wants to make a go out in Alberta you have to learn to ignore the arrogant ones who just want to shoot you down and the chance of one bettering themselves and their family.
Anyone know of a good moving company? :discodance:

Carebear, if it means anything at all: I believe in your 7 year plan to leave Bro-Ok-anagan behind and build a better life.
You'll meet new friends, have lots of tears and missing of the lake etc. But you won't miss pay cheque to pay cheque living.
All the best to you.

My wife and I moved here , after liveing in Ft. Mcmurray for thirty years. We raised our children there and they are now raiseing their kids there. We really enjoyed it there there is all sorts of things to do sports, theatre ,hunting and fishing. There is an active community college that offers all kinds different classes. If you get out and meet people that live there not justwork there, it is a very positive and lively place. You won't have the orchards or wineries but if you look there are
lots of things to keep you busy the 7 year plan will fly by ours did it turned to 30 . good luck
