"the local thing" ... what about franchises that are owned by locals?

Re: Kelowna restaurants suffering tough times
Franchises generally don't get their food locally.
Frozen blocks of food in cardboard boxes come in from Franchise HQ. Could be from as far away as Texas. They may need to buy produce "locally", but that is coming from "food services" trucks from the coast. God forbid they buy from all the farms and orchards in our backyard. Much cheaper to bring it in from the coast.
A 200-500K cheque is paid out to to "the franchise" to use their name and menu - which goes to Franchise HQ.
The cheaper they bring in the frozen food and sell it to the locals, the more money they make.
Franchises are the opposite of "local", even if "locals" have bought into the franchise package meal deal.
Medi Market - best place in town ;) < -- try their sub's.

The problem with those, are that they are just business owners, with little to no knowledge of the restaurant industry. They have little to no control over how the restaurant is run or what food/drink they can offer. They are there for the buck and nothing more. I would much rather see those restaurants that have control of what they can do being supported by local patronage.

Re: Kelowna restaurants suffering tough times
I think most people would be a bit surprised about where their "local" restaurants get their ingredients. Sure, some source locally from local growers - but you may have trouble convincing me the halibut on the menu is local or that the tomatoes in January are fresh from a local farmer.
SYSCO/HRI does a booming business supplying boxes of products to your fave "local" eating place. http://www.syscokelowna.ca/main.cfm?id=5441

I think that "most" people realize where these restaurants get their food from.........I believe the topic was locally owned.......

Re: Kelowna restaurants suffering tough times
I went out for dinner last saturday with my boyfriend and this is how it went.
The food was great! Our waitress was great. but...
The other waitress who was serving the other tables around us told her life story to them.
She is in the LPN program and just finished semester one. Her practicum was in Summerland. Complained about how bored she was giving the elderly care and that she had to help five seniors. She complained about how it was hard to study for her tests because the teacher would not tell her what to study. She also went on to say working at her restaurant was a lot harder then her schooling.
Then she went off on a rampage about tipping. She had to pay out 3% of the total bill to the other staff. She said that was unfare because she did all the work. She also had a job offer to a nicer restaurant but then she would have to pay out 6% of the total bill but that it might be worth it because they serve a higher class of people. She has worked at this restaurant in West Kelowna for six years, her mom use to be a manager of it.
Her parents are divorced but that they have moved on to find other relationships. She is very happy that they are happy. Her father bought her a car when she turned sixteen, her mother paided for driving lessons.
The music was quiet back ground music and she was within three feet of our table. It was a bad experience because I do not need to know that much about her.
Luckily, we were only there an hour or I'm sure I would have heard more.

Yes GF there are franchised locations that are locally owned..........geez, why do you always try to make more out of something than needs to be.........the list was started as locally owned.........don't see any on that list that are a franchise to my knowledge...........
To the poster that thinks CF fish place brings in fresh, have you ever smelt it in there ??????? If it's brought in fresh, it should NOT stink in the store..........try the new one on the highway by Choices , wouldn't even know it was a seafood store......

Add Le Plateau Bistro in Tutt Square to the list. This is not a cheap place but if you are a real foody and looking for somewhere for a special occasion you will be delighted, not only by the food but by the whole experience of eating there.
We will be at the Wild Apple Grill this Friday for my partner's birthday. It's been a while since I've been there but I've had great experiences in the past.

Maybe the title of the list should be: Local independent restaurants
A common mistake that people make when trying to design something completely foolproof is to under estimate the ingenuity of complete fools.
