Re: knox mtn hillclimb - best view?
On the mountain :dyinglaughing:
My favorite was always the first viewpoint, there's a lot of tire spinning, some drifting, and a helluva lot accelerating going on there :)
However that is only 1 of two spots I've ever been to!

How about a Helicopter so you can see the whole race?

Can't argue that is the BEST view, but hard to feel and hear the action from up there!
I'd say in the passenger seat!!

It's interesting that every year I've lived here there is this last minute plea for volunteer's for this event. (no point just an observation)
A common mistake that people make when trying to design something completely foolproof is to under estimate the ingenuity of complete fools.

Volunteers are definitely needed and welcome but be prepared for a long day.
You have to show up at 7am and I'd say on average you can plan on being at your station until 5pm and that's Saturday and Sunday.
As for vantage point it's hard to say and depends on the person. It's the type of race where any corner can be interesting and there isn't any position that gives you a view of all goings on.
I'm somewhat biased and prefer turn three.

Why is this not on tv?
I would think some enterprising person would have done it by now.
Look at what it did for Targa NFLD.
We went the third year because we saw it on tv.
But hey, I guess Kelowna thinks they can't compete with what Newfoundland has to offer. I mean where would you go if you saw them both on tv? We'll probably never know. Unless Housewives of Kelowna shoot up there.
The hillclimb could be such an event. Targa NFLD started from nothing. Logistically impossible in the OK. But the hillclimb could be fantastic on the screen. Pavement cams, in-car, tower shots.
Now, Housewives of the Kelowna Hillclimb might sell.
The best seat in the house is on the track as a volunteer. Been there, done that. westwood, langley, haney, skagit, monroe. Never raced a day in my life. All in the corners.

The Targa Newfoundland event attracts approximately 200 competitors each year from countries as far away as the Turks & Caicos and Australia. The event annually engages over 2000 volunteers in 70 communities and generates an average of $16 million per year (directly and indirectly) for the provincial economy – making it a considerable contributor to small business in rural Newfoundland.

Knox Mountain Hill climb SUCKS
The Knox Mountain hill climb is well past it's due date. Sure there may still be some guys who are ready to burn up more hi-test fossile fuel to prove their skills, but ... who really cares? Every year, hill-climb organizers go to the media in the last week before the race begging for volunteers. There are very few people who even bother to buy tickets either. This is a clear demostration that there is really very little interest from the public.
Racing cars through a park is a riduculous waste of Kelowna's resources and parklands. Knox park is prized by Kelowna citizens for its beauty, the wildlife that can be seen, and above all it accessibilty. There are far more Kelowna citizens using Knox Mountain every weekend then are attracted to the hill-climb race. So by allowing the race to close the park, hundreds of citizens are denied access.
Closing down the park for a spring long weekend car race is a slap in the face to Kelowna's nature lovers, enrironmentalists, cyclists, hikers, the norhthend neighborhood - not to mention the deer and wildlife that will be on the run all weekend so that car racers can indulge themselves.
It is time to move beyond the car racing mentality. Its time to wake up, get into the 21st century and stop allowing car racing at Knox Mountain.

You can still hike in the back way - take the Poplar Point entry to Paul's Tomb then hike up to the top and back down again. There is also a new trail from Paul's Tomb going north. I agree that more people use the park for hiking than are attracted by the hill climb, but it is a long-standing event (since 1958), and there are many many other beautiful places to hike around Kelowna.
